Cars being released sometime in 2017 means a 2018 production model. So if everything is correct, we are 2 yrs away from seeing what it looks like and 2.5-3yrs before anyone can own/drive one. That is a long wait.

BMW wants Z4 replacement before 2020
That's definitely unconventional by BMW standards. BMW usually replaces their models after 6-7 years at the most. The current Z4 been out since 2009, so it's due to be replaced basically now. Sounds like they'll put off the replacement in order to use the new joint platform.

11 years is crazy long for a Z4 replacement but I guess they want to get the Z5 out to market first. Either way it sounds like BMW has a lot riding on this new co developed platform which can only mean good things for both companies.

I thought they are trying to hit the target Tokyo Motor Show this year. They can reveal the car this year, and release it the following year, just like Ford does to GT. Unless the design is not finalized, I don't see why they need to hold the unveiling close to release date.

BMW has announced plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their first U.S. race win at the 2015 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

As part of the celebration, BMW will unveil a 2015 Z4 GTLM that features a special 3.0 CSL-inspired livery. The car will eventually go on to compete in the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 21st.

The company will also celebrate the 328 by showing the 328 Touring Mille Miglia Coupe that "pioneered lightweight construction techniques and advanced aerodynamics, and won the 1940 Mille Miglia endurance race." BMW will also showcase the 328 that Sir Stirling Moss drove to his first professional race win in 1947.

Besides the aforementioned models, BMW will display a road-going 1973 3.0 CSL, a 1980 M1 and the Z3 roadster from Goldeneye. There will also be a handful of newer models including the 6-Series Convertible, the X6 M and the i8.

The BMW guy said "before 2020" so it could be next year for all we know? Shouldn't be hard to improve on the current Z4 since it's way too heavy for a roadster which is supposed to be a fun type of car. My last favorite Z4 was the first generation Z4 M Coupe. Now there's a fun and rare car

If the two production sports cars from the joint venture came out looking like this, I'd think Toyota will make way more buzz with this design.

I love that BMW M GT sketch. The hood is a bit too bulbous but otherwise a beautiful look.

Here's another Z5 render looks like a mashup of a Z car and the FT-1.
