86 to Supra trade in question

Hey guys,

So ideally i want to get into a 23 Manual this year but clearly allocation is scarce, especially in NY. Most dealers either have a long list or wont sell outside of their city.

I need to get into a new car this summer and i figured maybe i go for something a bit cheaper and try getting into a GR86 for now. My question is for those who may know, would it be realistic to get into an 86 and ask the dealer if they can put me first on the list to trade in as soon as they have allocation, more realistically for a 2024 next year. Figure since i already am doing business with them they would be inclined to put me into a more expensive car.

Is that something that would be possible? And would it be a good idea? I’ve never bought a new car from a dealer btw.

Not a good idea, you're going to lose a bunch of money on the 86 when you trade it in. Just wait or buy something you're going to keep...

Can you do it - certainly. You'll be buying the 86 while likely having to put a deposit down on the Supra and then you trade in when the Supra is ready. Is it a good idea financially - no.

If you truly need to get a new car this summer versus waiting until the Supra allocation you're better off buying a used car that is farther down the depreciation curve (though used car prices are finally dropping after being elevated a few years...).

No point, i'd source a car from out of state and pay shipping if it were me. If not i'd buy a beater till an allocation opened up but certainly not a brand new car that my intention was to trade

I would hunt for a Supra now and pass on the 86. With your plan you would spend way more $$$ to get into a Supra.

You’d probably be better off seeing if they have a used car that won’t depreciate as much or if need be go with one of their products that typically don’t depreciate much at all, like a 4Runner or Tacoma. Another option, at least here in Canada (but likely a similar site in US), is to take over someone’s lease, here the website is leasebusters, that way you can get a car for under a year with little commitment and sometimes they will even sweeten the deal to get out of their payments.

Yes, for sure shop outside your state as well for the Supra.

Trade... It'll still be a transaction. Are you financing or paying cash upfront? If financing, you'll have to sell and do all the transactions once again like getting a loan.. If they run the credit on GR86, depending on when you find the Supra, chances are they'll run it again. You'll get a check from dealer. Payoff the loan. Get another loan.. to my knowledge.

The MY2024 will be announced in a few weeks and be creeping onto lots in a few months. If you know what you want you need to be aggressive with finding it and negotiating with the dealer that has the color and trim you want, even if it’s out of state. I had to look all over the country to find my A91-CF in AZW. If I would have waited for a dealer to magically have one come in I would have been SOL. I was fortunate to find one in a neighboring state and at the price I was looking for. Definitely don’t settle as an 86 is ? and a Supra is ?. Have to work to get what you want. Never Settle…

I did the same thing. Dealer had no idea if/when they'd get a Supra so i took a GR86. Kept it for almost a year and sold it to carmax for what I paid for it originally.
Now I've had the Supra almost a year. I'm thinking about getting another 86

In stock form, the Supra is pretty fucking fast. It doesn't seem like it on paper because there are a lot of cars that out accelerate it. But in reality, the capabilities of the car are so far beyond what you can use on the street, that it's either, a little boring to drive hard, or you realize just how insane you're driving is. Something like a Mustang GT is somewhat interesting on the back roads because the chassis is heavy and sucks. There are corners that I'd have to prepare for in the Mustang because they could get a little sketch that the Supra treats as straightaways.

Don't get me wrong, the car is amazing on really tight, technical back roads. But on "kinda curvy" back roads, the car can easily be into the triple digits before you really feel like you're pushing it. The 86 brings you back down to earth, since the car lacks the insane torque and infinite grip, you actually have to maybe brake for corners and downshift back into the powerband, rather than the "briefly stop accelerating so much for this corner" approach in the Supra.

I previously owned the gen1 86 (supercharged!) and totally understand the enjoyment in having to work the car to go fast. The Supra is indeed very quick, and I only fully push it on track and autox. I live next to some epic backroads, but you really need to keep the Supra on a leash. Too many variables (a slow or broken down car over that blind crest, downed branches, animals, broken down sections of the road from a storm, etc).

I enjoy whipping my MT E46 just as much on backroads as the Supra.

My MX5 is similar in that I can get close to redline without being white-knuckled. It is lots of fun that way, especually with the top down. But after a while, I felt a longing for more speed, speed I used to have 10 years ago, speed that punches you in the back as you're climbing a hill. That's the itch that the Supra will fulfill (as soon as the break-in miles arrive). Even a supercharged/turbocharged MX5 will not adequately fulfill that need.
