About to purchase bootmod3, but I have one question.

    How necessary is it to have a charger hooked to the battery when writing and flashing the tune? Is it merely for just in case or will tuning kill my battery?

    you don't want your battery dying during writing to the ECU.
    backup of DME took ~30 min. Even with lights and fan off, bunch of things are still using battery. You don't want to drain it..

    toyota list in their special tool list a charger of 80amps! while reprogramming.
    we bought one just to be sure.

    I recommend a charger of at least 6-8amps for the initial flash on a healthy battery.

    never had any issues being off charge especially with a brand new car. Have done it twice before and never hooked it up to charge.

    Charger is not a bad idea especially on a car that hasn't been daily driven in a long while. However, flashes are so quick, takes only about 3mins to do the initial install that includes OBD unlocking of the DME for tuning. All subsequent flashes are map switches that take about 15 seconds start to finish including code clear at the end.
