Hey folks, I picked up my Supra back in 2024. Bought it straight off the boat, made sure the dealer didn't wash it, and had it picked up immediately (within a week of arrival) to a detailer to do full body PPF in an enclosed trailer. I went to great lengths to make sure I would be PPFing a pristine car.

I did not do a detailed inspection of the car when I picked it up. It was left in its plastic from the container, but I didn't inspect ANY of the uncovered paint. Egg on my face, I guess.

Picked up the car from PPF, and saw this under the film by the badge.

My gut assumption was that the PPF installer damaged the paint when applying, but a couple weeks later I noticed similar-looking issues all under the trunk lid. All under the PPF, so either the PPF installer did it, or it came like that from the factory. Couple snaps below, but essentially the entirety of the underside of the trunk lid is like this.

It seems like a couple of others have had issues with this area of the car as well, but I just want to get everyone's opinion on who I should be going after right now. PPF installer? Toyota for warranty? Any thoughts?

The first picture looks like the PPF installer did a typical PPF installer install. The others are a toss up. Too late now anyway as the dealer will just blame the PPF guy.

And as for not checking the car thoroughly on pick-up.. no comment.

The paint on these cars is extremely brittle and i swear will chip away if you sneeze on it, but since it’s been PPF’d, toyota will most likely use that as an argument against you.

If you have a dealer you are close with maybe try them and convince them that the installer noticed there was paint issues during their install and that could MAYBE help your case but it’ll be a tough discussion either way if you proceed with blame on either party.

PPF installer. The irony of it, lol.

Do we think the underside of the trunk is also from the PPF install? I have seen others on this forum that look like this as well that were covered under warranty. I am not ultra familiar with how to install PPF but it doesn't seem like a process that could do something like that?

I'm going to try and get the installer to fix the first mark if I can, worst case have them just take the PPF off and rip it over to Toyota and see what they're willing to do under warranty, if anything.

And as for not checking the car thoroughly on pick-up.. no comment.
You can comment, it was fucking stupid. Lesson learned.

My advice is to go back to the installer and ask for a refund on the install part of the PPF and then just live with it. You'll likely generate more issues trying for a repair warranty or not.

What kinds of issues are possible here? Don't think it's worth trying to at least polish it out a little bit with a paint correction so it's not so noticeable?

Literally, the one time I show some self restraint.. lol.

I have never ever seen a car where people haven't said that the paint was thin or brittle or otherwise shit. It's just a regular paint job, they're pretty much all the same, albeit shit.

I mean if the area is not PPF'd you could touch up paint it.. depends on how much time and money you want to put into it. Realistically people are not going to notice it. I have random chips and knicks, a small crack in my headlight etc. no one notices and says it looks pristine lol...
