I lost my backup electronic key. Do I need a new computer to replace the backup? A new computer is $3,600. My local Toyota is not sure if a new computer is required.

Ouch, not good at all. Mine has an air tag and sits in my safe. I haven’t seen evidence that you can actually get one these days. Someone on here mentioned buying a BMW Key from another model and having a BMW dealer program it.

Found them. A neighbor, who is a close friend, had them mixed in with his Corvette keys. His wife found them. In any case, a new computer is not needed. Still don't know if Toyota would have to go through BMW to make a new key or what it would cost. My spare is now in the safe.

JUST got a new key after 6 months... I had to go through numerous parts departments before I finally found someone that would order one. One local dealer told me they had to replace the BDC even though I still have a key (5 grand)... and wouldn't list or work with me... the other local dealer simply told me there was nothing they could do.. I had to work with a dealer 70 miles away to get this done.

For others, this is what the order form looked like.

Also: it paired using the steering column no problem, shame dealers are charging 200 bucks for a literal 2 minute process.

$$Texas... $833.. yowzers... although once you start feeling like you simply cannot get another key for any price, 833 sounds reasonable....

i'm not happy about this... the whole "the keys can only be made by the manufacturer, and you can't buy a used one" is some serious anti-consumer, we-need-right-to-fix-laws nonsense...

I have a 3rd key from the 1st Supra I owned & totaled. Y’all making me feel pretty lucky…. Guess I could always get that one reprogrammed if I ever lost (or ruined) the spare.

No, that's the thing, the keys have to be mated to the VIN from the factory, so your keys off the old totaled supra only start that old & totaled supra... sucks...

@garudathree is it true you got a new key for 300? if so i'd love to hear how you did that.

it's $400 from a toyota dealer, comes vin coded to the car, but needs to be registered (takes 5 seconds). about a month before it's ready. you can't use key fobs from other cars.
ordered via the phone, picked up in person with license and registration as proof of ownership.

i only lost the remote fwiw, not the physical key

if i lost the physical key, i'd buy a cheap blank, and have a local locksmith cut it for $40.

ah, so i paid for the physical key too, but still i paid about 600 for the fob... oh well, i've learned my lesson.

I hadn't considered the local locksmith angle... i was too busy planning to post a 10k bounty on cloning keys...
