Powder Coating - plastic engine cover

Has anyone successfully had their large plastic engine cover powder coated.

Seems like this can be done depending on the material used and curing temps.

I’m not a fan of the porous plastic that dislikes to be wiped down. Microfiber towels drag on it when drying it off. Hoping to end up with a semi-gloss black finish… smooth to the touch. I like to keep the engine compartment clean and dust free.

I doubt it can be done. AFAIK powder need to bake at about 400F-450F. If you wanted it smooth, which sounds like you do, you would have to sand it or bondo or something. The surface has to be smooth if you want the powder to be smooth.

I had a local guy airbrush and paint mine for me and it came out great. He put a nice clear on it as well. Just as nice if not better then finish on the car.

I just painted mine myself, got the paint from automotivetouchup.com wasn’t very much and 2k clear. Less than 100$ total.

If I was to do it again, I wouldn’t spend the hours sanding it. I’d just hit it with a good filler primer instead.
