So I use a solo 2. No ecu data but still gives you a lot data if you use their software and then down load the sessions. I also have a my Laps transponder. Have the track addict paid version but aways forget to bring phone and start as I have the other two going all the time. I am not familiar with the others so thanks for sharing.

I have terrible luck with cell service at tracks, so I stay away from anything app based like that. If someone visited the track casually but want lap times and bare minimum data, I’d get a used aim solo. Next step up would be the Garmin, even though at that price point it should have OBD2 comparability. And for people who want to deep dive, AIM solo 2DL with the smarty cam or something comparable.

These lap timer apps don’t depend on cell service. They use GPS.

Smarty cam, imho, is overpriced outdated resolution. I think they just finally went to 1080p and the quality still looks bad compared to a $300 GoPro.

I don't disagree with you on smarty cam being overpriced. But, the suit of products (timer/camera/software) is what I'm looking for. Being able to see lap data, OBD PIDs and video at the same time is what I'm willing to pay for.

Can get behind that, that is the big reason I moved to the Racecapture system. Nice thing about racecapture is that you can use the superior GoPros.

Also, are there any engine parameters, if any, need to be monitored a little more closely while out on track? For example, in my FD water temp and intake air temp are important to check while on straights to prevent overheating and excessive knock.

@neverknowsbest Here is the display I used last season.

Nice thing about the software is you can configure items to flash or even the whole screen to flash when things hit certain thresholds, because as we all know, you rarely have your eyeballs on a screen while on track.

I have a new setup I will be trying out this season with a couple different sizes, this being the largest:

I do the same with my phone and bimmerlink. May be a bit of a dumb question, but what's considered "high" in terms of coolant/oil Temps? I've had my car put away for winter for the last few months so I kinda forgot what operating Temps I was seeing consistently.

That’s a good question. Assuming we have a factory gauge and sensor for this. Making me want to go look now, lol. Unless you’ve done some power mods to your car, she can take a good track thrashing in the heat. Or so I’ve heard… the guys I’ve talked to in Homestead Florida run w/out issue in the summer ?. They are completely stock engines however.

A lot of this data acquisition is completely for fun. Great to see all the different uses and knowledge bases on here. Kinda cool to learn a little more than just driving. If Brian (Razor) had an online shop, bet he could make some coin…. His setup is sick! Ain’t gonna lie ?

And hope to see any of you FloRida peeps this weekend at Homestead. https://farausa.com/ Supposed to rain Saturday and dry on Sunday. Perfect conditions imo. Best of both worlds to drive/play in.

Yeah it would be nice to see a stickied post showing "hey these temp ranges are optimal for stock setup" or something like that. Currently I am all stock other than an intake and catback. Probably going to do a trans tune this year but I dont think I'll be pushing extra power for a while.

I have logs of stock power 2020 on track that I have shared. I can share them again.

Normal operating temp (idle and cruise) for oil is right around 230f and coolant around 195-200f

Here is some data from a session at Lime Rock in 71* ambient temps. 100% stock power, stock tune, zero power adders, down to the oem paper intake filter.

You can see the system does a good job of cooling. Oil temps basically don't even move.

Real quick info (running to work) after a great weekend at Homestead. Last session I ran her hard on fuel reserve. No hesitation or fuel starvation. My lap times were consistent all the way to the end. I’m not recommending anyone do this but wanted to share my experience. I kept the “miles to empty“ on the dash and can say she was accurate all the way to the station

I definitely will be more careful next time ?

Also LOVED the Garmin Catalyst. My 1st weekend using it. I’ll have to go to their cloud and figure out how to off load the videos. Lots of cool data on their phone app. And the unit itself has tons of information & great video! Will share when I get around to it

Another vote for the Catalyst. My co-driver for last year's OneLap had one, and we really enjoyed the analysis. We didn't datalog with it, as the time trial sessions are so short, there was limited value in that context.

The Catalyst device itself was pretty intuitive, and it just worked.
