I wanted to stay out of this, but even the HR series motors (450-500whp stock internals) aren't stout in comparison to the B58 (600+), let alone something like a JZ (900+) lol. They also aren't turbocharged factory... So it's not even close to apples to apples IMO.

And yeah, chassis vs handling the two are so far apart it's not even funny. That said, the Z34 is 10 years old... I also think they're still an awesome car for the money, but there are too many facets to this to call it even ground.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the 370z (it has double wishbones up front ) and it has a fantastic motor with a really sweet torque cure. This is nothing to scoff at...

But Horsepower is pretty much a bunch of BS imo. Do some datalogging on your car, your torque curve is your acceleration curve. Compare car's torque curves to each other if you want to know how they compare acceleration wise. I wish the industry would adopt a power rating system like Sport Compact Car Magazines Torque Under the Curve score they used to do in the old Ultimate Street Car challenge. HP shouldn't be the main metric in the automotive world. We generally only care about acceleration, HP is mostly useful when calculating top speed. Its a hold over from the days before speed limits, when a cars maximum cruising speed was a critical metric for buyers. Its super misleading in this day and age.

These engineering reports and graphs are all well and good, but it looks like the excuses given for the 86's 200hp. I'm firmly in the camp that loves the way the 86 drives, and thinks it's fun as hell to stay in 2nd and 3rd and rev the engine up. But if Toyota wants to sell cars, it needs to have at least the 380 hp figure. At 330hp too many people will look at a Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, Kia, and others, then won't even come in the showroom. I've seen it with the 86, it gets crossed off the list before any real consideration.

That is exactly my point. 200hp sounds like a healthy motor, like it should be pretty quick. But with only 150lbs/ft claimed at the crank, and 136-140lbs/ft to the wheels, the dyno graph tells the real story...

It only makes 200hp because it manages to make torque at a pretty high RPM. The reality is it accelerates as quickly at 3000rpm as it does at 6000rpm (we won't talk about 4000rpm lol). Again, the HP metric nets false expectations.

That said, I like the 86. If you've ever owned the original car, you wouldn't complain about the performance of the new one. It managed to capture the intent and soul of the original quite well. I just wish it had a Toyota inline 4 (a Beams 3sge swap fixes that).

I hear you, the problem is that many people can't get over the 200 number to actually get in here and drive the car. The car itself is a blast!

The Supra will suffer the same fate in the 45-50k range and 335 HP...

@SupraFiend And thats exactly why a bone stock mk2 with 160hp 33 years ago is within half a car length in a straight line dash as an FRS lol. Torque curves are everything.
