zero development has been done on an 86 successor, so that car will be sold as-is for a few more years and/or discontinued unless they do the right thing and throw the FA20DIT into it. wishful thinking most likely since Subaru seems to have an aversion to putting anything into the car...

Nissan is even more of a disappointment, with no developments aside from whiteboard engineering on the R36, the IDx never made it past concept, and they've openly confirmed zero development has been done on the Z34 successor.

Honda is only doing the CTR, S660, and NSX according to their PR people, but I guess that's better than most.

Why can't Toyota make it where if subaru doesn't want the car with Turbo or the car at all, to drop it and let toyota place a turbo in it. But since they are using a Subaru engine, subaru gets royalties from the purchases, something like 50/50 percentage? I don't understand it.

The people want it and are willing to throw money at it, and I'm sure Toyota has no issues with it.

Nissan is even more of a disappointment...

Nissan has stated officially it will do what's required regulations-wise to keep selling the 370Z for the next few years. Their strategy to keep sales from tanking completely has been to lower prices rather than update the car - the base model goes for $24k USD here. They did add a much-needed new Exedy clutch to the car this year which works well.

A70 will comment probably, but I suspect it is just a numbers game, the buyers who would want it....really want it, but it would be low in overall % sales for Toyota, and they look at the big picture where to put dollars and resources so it maximizes sales for them. There is stiff competition out there now and there alot more companies making really good cars. I would guess that the Supra was even on the bubble of not coming back at one point....

Unless the supra's lower trim will fit directly in the slot the upgraded 86 would be, then I understand, but cut the cost down then because there would be direct competition between toyota, Subaru and BMW.

Like, if a 200 hp car cost 23k, the 255 HP trim is 35k, it would be out the range realistically. It's infuriating to know it's easy to get more power but due to fnancial/corproate politics, it just won't happen.

they basically just don't want to sink any more money into it according to Tada... typically accounting. they have also been busy with the new "sports car" so we may see Tada do one more update to the 86 before he retires (he is actually only still working because Akio personally bumped his pay and asked him to stay as someone to instruct the junior engineers).

and yes, some of what is to come plays into this as well, but that's a discussion for another day.

pretty much the definition of disappointing IMO, but it's kind of cool that they will keep it alive despite it hitting the bottom line or just breaking even.

Well if you look at the Subaru WRX vs the STi, there's a 37HP/32TQ difference and the price difference is about a $9K depending on the package you go with. Of course you get other things on top with the STi.

The issue I mainly see with this is the fact that Toyota's response now to those wanting a more powerful 86 is we now have it with the all new Supra successor BUT it comes in Automatic ONLY. So even for those driving a manual 86/BRZ that are willing to upgrade but want to stick with the manual transmission either have to settle for the auto or buy something else.

you won't be waiting a whole lot longer before you start seeing/hearing all sorts of stuff from different folks. it's unfortunate I'm not all that helpful anymore, but I've done what I can.

I honestly think everyone here has a good enough grasp of the car to understand the current state of affairs and know more or less what it is coming. the other stuff (the stuff I can't talk about) is great and all, but I think it will be all the more thrilling to see everyone's reactions when they realize some of the tricks Toyota has played and what they have planned for this project.

I find that relieving but consiering I'm a current owner of a Toyota 86 and am satisfied currently. The idea of a more refined, powerful version will have my blood boiling.

Though, if Subaru and toyota can make a oem shop in the dealer where they can then sell turbo kits from the factory that won't terminate the lease if installed in the dealership would have me happy as fuck..

Pipe dream.

But hey, if toyota plans on releasing a Manual supra in the highest trim with the s58 engine since it is based off of the B58 engine after extensive testing, then, I really need to win the lottery.

... really wish I could chime in on the first 9 words in that last paragraph, but oh well, people will have to wait and see what Toyota is doing.
I can only infer from that that they are releasing a manual version. You wouldn't say something like that if they were only releasing automatic only as that is the assumed current state of affairs.

Well either way, I hope the manual people enjoy their outdated and slower transmission ;)

I really do hope they have a manual option, otherwise this car will be perfect for me.

some modern cars offer manuals on lesser trims to save on cost and add a 'fun factor'

... who knows? ;)
Base trim will have manual option, heard it here first folks. Maybe they'll also offer manual windows to give our manual shoppers an even more primitive experience XD
