Hi everyone, first post here, been on the supraforum board for a long time, but been a long time since I'd been on them. Naturally as the topic states, has anyone had a Z4 previously now gone to an MKV. I went from a 87 MK3 7mgte to a '03 e85 Z4 and have been toying with the idea of adding a 2021/2022 MKV supra, not getting rid of my E85 any time soon. But curious on the boards here if there's any z4 owners also out there.

If you can, keep both. The E85 is a gem.

Yeah I don't think my e85 is going any time soon. Have had it for almost 10 years now, the longest owned car I've ever had, and been a labor of love through the years, not to mention projects are still in the list/works for it, and so much so the Mrs. has promised it to our boy when he was born and he's only 4 now LOL.. So the MKV is really just adding to rather than replacing.

You'll probably get more replies on bimmerpost.
Not as much as you'd think. I'm on Zpost and Z4-forums and most on those boards have been talk prelaunch or just at launch, not much on the way of new owners of the MKV, that's why I figured I'd come here and see right from the source of owners here.

I've had 1 x E85 (3.0) and 5 x E89s (mix of 35i and 35iS). I'd say the Supra is more comparable to the E89 as with the metal top up it feels like a coupe. I'd say the E89 35iS is better value for money and with a bit of money spent on tuning and suspension would be just as much fun to drive as the Supra. I'm actually thinking about getting another E85 3.0 to go alongside the Supra for when I feel like a bit of top down motoring.

Have you done track days in any of them to compare? Every time I drop the top is a reminder why I never traded for an E86. But I'm also looking to do more track in the MKV and less with my E85 now. I have an E82 as the daily/kid hauler now so what ever is in the mix next is for pure me time.

I've only sat in an E89, not driven, but have driven E85 in every configuration (US market) including M. My E85 is prefacelift 2.5i M54 with ESSvt1, racing dynamics headers ceramic coated, super sprint full behind that, lsd, bbk, eibach/koni combo and lots of other bits through the years to get it where it is now. I've toyed with even the idea of getting a Z4MC but rather than another E86/86 and figuring which to drive when and letting one or the other sit too much I was pondering the MKV to add to the mix next. Also tough to convince the wife why I need 1 of each E85/86s. I had also considered a C7 vette or jag F-type driving both back to back in 2014, but after recently sitting in a F-type and MKV back to back, the MKV is feeling more comfortable than the F-type once did. I was fortunate enough to get the test drive a 2020 MKV but with the short seat time and the 20k mark up passed knowing there was already updating in the mix, just a matter of time and seeing how that time was only a matter of months from when I test drove it. Any good seat time comparison you have is definitely appreciated.

wow. ESS = supercharger, right?

so none of my Z4s were modified. I did track days in both the E85 3.0 and the E89 35iS. Purely recreational, i.e. not trying to set serious lap laptimes. The E85 was much tighter. the E89 was faster on the straights, but that's about it. The Supra is tighter and faster than both, though I've not done any track days in it yet. I reckon your modified Z4 will be more fun on the track than a stock Supra. If only because you have less $$ invested in it so are likely to drive harder.

Great input this is what I was looking for thanks a ton!

Yep this is how it sits now. I went with the centrifugal rather than the twin screw ess did mainly to not put excess strain on daily/normal driving since the twinscrew really puts boost up super early, being just at 100k for mileage I didn't want to blow the motor right from the start, but the M54 really can handle it, just wanted to play it safe for the long run.. I paired with a lsd from diffsonline and changed to a 4.10:1 final drive, so when you're on it, shifting you stay in a higher rpm range in next gear than stock ratio to keep higher boost levels when you'd want it, with the offset on the gears it'd be close boost that ess's twinscrew has on a stock ratio at shift points. trade up is you're not in any given gear as long and top speed drops a touch.

My track days seem bout on par with yours, more for the enjoyment and honing skill than dead set on lap times, along with a few auto crosses here and there. Not competitive at all, just pure fun.
It's sounding more and more that the MKV really is what I'm looking for. I have a buddy that competitively tracks his e46M3 and he also tracks his Cayman GT4 and has said he never pushes it as hard in the GT4. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of reserve at first for sure in the MKV, after all learning a whole new car, gotta give it the time and love...

I had an ā€˜08 E85 Z4 2.5si (N52B25). I was more keen on the E86 but my dealer didn’t have it in stock and offered a deal on the roadster instead. So the new Supra is me making up for that lost coupe.

I barely drove it roof down, but absolutely loved that car. Where I live, cars need to be registered for every ten years usage. I had planned to keep it past 10y, but i just didn’t have the time to maintain it with parts gradually breaking down.

The N52B25 isn’t the best engine from BMW, either. I also had a ā€˜04 3 series, so I think your M54 is the better keeper. I’m not a big fan of the E89 - doesn’t feel as focused as the E85.

that said, being in the Supra does remind me of my old Z - but far more powerful, comfortable and handles much tighter (as others have shared). And something about it just feels very familiar. Always wished I could ask other E85/A90 owners if they feel the same way! Maybe it’s the rear haunches peering in the side mirror? This car def feels like the modern successor (albeit sans soft top). And I do appreciate having updated tech in the Supra.

Don’t think you’ll regret having both in your driveway!

I definitely get what you mean, sitting back to back in the MKV and then a day later revisiting a F-type that came up for sale the Supra just felt more at home and the F-type didn't feel as it once did when I first test drove one in 2014.

Besides track days I've practically lived in the car top down everywhere I've driven in it, but have felt that need for a coupe as well, I agree they'd both be great together at home together, I'm not as much for the tech and infotainment that's been getting into cars today but it's the nature of the beast now, the big bonus to it is the adaptive suspension and other aspects to that, still just not one keen on all the apps a car has today lol

Great thread! I was also wondering how the J29 compares to the E89 since you can find a low mileage E89 for pretty cheap these days.

I had the M sport suspension in my E85 and it rode pretty rough on uneven roads, unless you drove fast! The Supra’s adaptive suspension is far more comfortable on crappy roads.

That's one thing for daily roads I'm looking forward to. Stock I had the M Sport suspension too but now have koni yellow adjustables rears 1/2 turn from max stiffness fronts 1 turn from full stiffness with eibach springs. When I went with turner camber plates up front for day to day road the nvh was too much transfer to the firewall for me to keep the white 3 point strut tower brace in my pic on for daily use. I went back to the stock bars for street and it helped a bit on the nvh side but yes a rather uncomfortable ride on some of the local Michigan roads we have.
