my brother and I were just discussing that the other day, and other than possibly giving BMW some tech we were both like yeah.... I dunno.

Toyota saves a ton of money on this however.

I'm struggling to understand something. What exactly did Toyota bring to this deal other than their expertise? I'm pretty excited about this car but it seems like so many parts have been picked from BMW, there's nothing Toyota or Japanese that I can see other than the design of which the parts manufacturers will probably be BMW. Surely Toyota has enough parts of their own. They have even gone with BMW PCD
they brought just the dough

in all fairness until we find out what the actual powertrains are, as it has been rumored that at least part of the engine design would be sourced from toyota, they may have invested more into this project than we think. for the most part, i'm sure this project is more of a reskin/rebadge, we'll see how it drives...the GR super sport seems to be Toyota's ultimate goal & major project so it is understandable if the supra was relegated to a cost savings project from that point of view...

I'm in the same boat too sometimes.
I see all these rumors of BMW power-trains & interior stuff in this car etc and think... ''So what exactly in this vehicle is from Toyota'' ?

I know they initially went into partnership for this project to share knowledge and technologies like Toyota - Hybrid tech & BMW - diesel.
Both of which according to rumors, this car is not running either hybrid or diesel.

I'm not complaining, i'm sure all will reveal itself in due time.
Its just an interesting thought to see what the actual point of this project was, apart from cost saving.

Same as the Toyota/Subaru thing.

Think of Toyota as the Project manager, BMW as contractor

Toyota have requirements and deliverables. Contracted a lot of componentsto BMW. Toyota still overseeing project with their own design etc. Toyota manage BMW deliverables according to their requirements.

I think the fact that the SPX laps SPA 10s faster than the equivalent Z4 speaks volumes to Toyota's involvement.

from everything we've heard so far did toyota really have more power over this project as they did with the twins? I sure never got that feeling..not to mention the twins were a clean slate that only resulted in 1 car & 1 design (ignoring bumper) whereas that isn't the case for the Supra. didn't A70 mention disagreements between the two teams? if i'm not mistaken the only major disagreement toyota encountered with the 86 was in the very beginning in order to convince subie of making a rwd car.

I'm not sure mate, I was under the impression was the disagreements were between engineering teams, and not at a top-level? But I am no expert on it

yeah, the engineering teams couldn't stand each other, but they actually ended up being fairly okay due to Tada speaking German and helping the BMW team try to understand some differences.

It was only after Tada assisted BMW in making the Z4 more competitive (after they got owned by 10s) that they would allow things to progress. They also laud Tada now and think he's incredible apparently lol.

Bingo.

I have no doubt that this car will be unmistakably Toyota as soon as you're behind the wheel, even if that wheel came out of a 2-series.

I had to look this up... the wheel looks slightly different to the 2 series? Different horn pad (round vs.... blob shaped) and the bottom spoke seems different too? Buttons are similar but not the same??

Unless I missed something and there's a 2 series wheel I don't know about.

There's one BMW that's really nice, why couldn't we get that one FFS

while I have no doubts on Tada's expertise, I do wonder what sort of insight he was really able to provide BMW who arguably should have accumulated more experience, talent and know how when it comes to performance machines than what Toyota had over the past 2 decades..

Remember, the Z4 isn't being tuned by the M division last I checked, if it were I doubt the SPX would have beat it so badly on SPA nor would they have needed Tada's input.

I never pressed for more information honestly, so I'm not sure what the specific details were.
