That's what I understood from reading some of the interviews as well. I think that when they asked former Supra owners if an inline 6 was a must have, that the understood context was a Toyota inline6 (basically a 3jzgte) and that a significant portion of former Supra owners would choose the Lexus v6tt over a BMW inline 6 (for heritage) hands down.

I haven't found any former Supra owners that preferred an engine from one of the most unreliable manufacturers in one of the most reliable sports cars ever produced (mk4 of course), let alone it having any powerplant other than a Toyota engine ... and that's what led to my question for you. I appreciate you responding.

Not to my knowledge, other than Tada himself. It wasn't so much that they wanted a BMW powerplant as it was that they had a current lineup of inline 6s already along with the associated running gear.

Had Toyota kept an inline 6 somewhere, like in a Lexus or something, we would have likely seen a Toyota powerplant for the Supra and a BMW powerplant for the Z4.

It was the heritage of Supra and inline 6 that made the difference in other words.

A70, thank you for your insight, openness, and information as you have heard it which gave many of us much needed relief from all of Toyota’s secrecy. Your posts were always diplomatic and respectful even when people like myself weren’t always the most positive :)

Wish you all the best and good luck on your new project!

Well now that there will be no real information on here maybe I can pull myself away until production.

Yeah, I think if the question were worded as "Would you rather stick to the Supra heritage and have an I6 even if it's from a BMW, or should we just stick a Toyota V6 in it?" the answers may have been different. I'm sure the Skyline community would have told Nissan they'd never buy a GTR that didn't have an I6, but they did ok by deviating from their past.

So I got some info from Torrance CA.. some engineer claims that there isn’t a manual option. A70, any truth behind that?

So there is a chance for this to change? If yes.. tell me if there is something that us as the Supra enthusiast can do to change Toyota’s mind

When the Supra comes out, post photos and agreements of buying a cayman 718 with a manual, just because it came with one. Nothing gets the blood boiling than losing a sale via the competition, not an outlier.

So for those new and old, the boards most resourceful & respected Toyota insider is leaving us.

I thought it would be fun to have a central thread to look back on with questions and answers before he's gone.

Rules: One and only one question per member, this will be your final chance to get maybe a hint of what's to come before he's gone... Make it count! (PLEASE NO REPEAT OF QUESTIONS, TRY TO ASK SOMETHING NEW)

So @A70TTR if you're up for It, how about one last question?

If you can pick one single thing that is most impressive about the new upcoming Supra, what would it be?

I'll join in, but I don't expect an answer.

I'm sorry if it's a two parter, but it is somewhat linked. Tetsuya Tada built the 86, and was the paltform that helped create the Supra moving forward because of the engineers involved.

So, my question is, in regards to the 86 and this car you've driven, can you say what was the biggest difference or similarities between the two? You could just focus on the 86 and say more this, less that.I drive an 86, so I want to know what to expect moving forward.

My preferred question is how you got in the know with toyota, but that's a question left not be answered.

Did you advise Toyota that Supra owners wanted a BMW inline 6 over a Toyota powerplant?
lmao, the troll is strong with this one
Thin ice dude. Go back to facebook or kinja.
LOL, GET'EM KILLER!

@A70TTR Thank you for the hints and tips, it's been a rollercoaster that I couldn't have enjoyed more. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors and best regards.

haha, this thread is already comical, but I'll do my best to answer what I can. I might not be able to answer all of these for various reasons though.

The low weight, how it was achieved, and how that affects everything including perception. There is far more to this than I'm letting on, but that's for the future.

Imagine if the 86 had an interior at the level of the M3, was twice as rigid, had BBK, and 340hp instead of 200 :)

I an am engineering communication liaison which is fairly low level but allows me to bump shoulders with important people and obviously engineers; that is all I will say.

sign the petition posted on here and tweet toyota with your feelings of disappointment. that's about all I can think of aside from what has already been said by auto journalists and some of us in the inner circle.

Thank you for the answer.

Find it more and more likely of wanting to head into the automative industry but don't know where to start with Toyota.

Considering I had recently gotten a speeding ticket in a 86, when I get behind the wheel with this Supra, expect me to say this leaving the dealership.
