That's what I understood from reading some of the interviews as well. I think that when they asked former Supra owners if an inline 6 was a must have, that the understood context was a Toyota inline6 (basically a 3jzgte) and that a significant portion of former Supra owners would choose the Lexus v6tt over a BMW inline 6 (for heritage) hands down.
I haven't found any former Supra owners that preferred an engine from one of the most unreliable manufacturers in one of the most reliable sports cars ever produced (mk4 of course), let alone it having any powerplant other than a Toyota engine ... and that's what led to my question for you. Not to my knowledge, other than Tada himself. It wasn't so much that they wanted a BMW powerplant as it was that they had a current lineup of inline 6s already along with the associated running gear.
Had Toyota kept an inline 6 somewhere, like in a Lexus or something, we would have likely seen a Toyota powerplant for the Supra and a BMW powerplant for the Z4.
It was the heritage of Supra and inline 6 that made the difference in other words.
