Sell?!

Do I wait to see if my neck injury improves or take advantage of the market?

So this thread really made me question the 0w-20. I'm at about 4k miles changed the original factory oil a few hundred miles ago and was going to go 3k (7k total miles)to change again to 0w20.

So I reached out to a friend of mine who owns a shop working on BMWs and has been in the business for 20 years and is just a very smart and reputable individual. I asked him his thoughts on the 0w-20 and he said in hot weather when you're pushing the car is just not thick enough. Take that for what you will, I'm just a guy on the internet who knows a guy...but IMO that was the gospel. I will let this 0w-20 sit in the car until I hit 5k and will be switching to 5w-30 every 3k moving forward.

Will likely be using the full synthetic gold bottle Castrol 5quart jugs they sell at Walmart. Used that stuff for 8 years in my old M3 and it ran like a top until the day I sold it to someone who is own their third track season with it.
Thanks for the information. Just changed my oil for the first time at 2700 miles (sent a sample to Blackstone) and decided to put the factory 0w-20 after I was not able to get the 5w-30 weight oil I wanted (Shell Helix Ultra) quickly enough, due to an upcoming track day and needing to get the job done. I'm thinking the same as you - I'll switch to the Shell at 5k miles and run it from there. Man, I had a '99 M3 - bought it new and owned it for 5 years. I very much miss that car... it was so fun. Selling it was one of the dumbest decisions I've ever made (my life is boring).

Ha! I had a Dakar Yellow E36 M3. I sold it so cheap and part of me regrets it, but life is too short to drive the same car for too many years.

I did 5w30 in that car and had 160k on it when I sold. Motor was in amazing shape, buyer immediately took it to track after minor suspension mods.

Man that's awesome. Great color for that car. Mine was silver... can't remember the name of the silver specifically. Had the upgraded wheels and the wing on the back from the factory. I actually ran Mobile 1 5w-40 in that car for most of its life given how much I was hammering on it. Served me well, and everything in the car, including the motor, was in great shape when I sold it. Only thing I ever needed to replace was a power steering pump that went out around 115k miles. Would love to own that car again at some point in the future and build a full-time track car. Maybe after the Supra. I don't have any room left in the garage! :D

5W-30 Special Tec LiquiMoly baby. BMW's remedy haha. Did my break in change at 1k miles and took it all the way up to 8k on the ODO. I noticed when i came in for my 1st free oil change, i switched back onto the factory 0w-20, i would burn a bar off the internal oil stick every 2k miles, switched back to LiquiMoly and it's been a troop, no burning/ consumption and honestly feels better for my conscience knowing the oil is thicker. ??

That's awesome, but I guess what I'm looking for here is what would be your recommendation based on your experience to current owners looking to avoid a major failure at 30k miles?
Take care of your car and don't treat it like a whore....... if you build it, and drive the shit out of it, you are going to reduce the engine life. The best way to get your engine to last is treat it like the manufacturer intended...... anything more than that and you are taking your car's life into your own hands. A car that is raced and constantly driven hard will require more maintenance and will wear out faster. Both BMW and Toyota have vested interest in the quality and durability of these cars. Why do you think they locked the ECUs and make them so difficult to tune? They know the engine will produce massive power, but it does reduce the longevity. NASCAR has engines producing 800hp...... and they are torn down after nearly every race and gone back through.
Treat them like a whore and they'll look and act like one before long..... treat them like a lady who has a bit of a wild side from time to time..... and you'll have a Long lasting relationship.

Or just run a proper 5W-40 oil in hot climates and 5W-30 in cooler climates and actually protect the engine while driving it like you want to, unlike the watery EPA rated garbage the manufacturer recommends from factory.

That's a great offer and you should take advantage of it. I had a 21 Supra 3.0 premium with similar miles. Six months ago before the used car market skyrocketed, Carmax only offered me $44k for my supra?!!! I ended up selling it to a Nissan dealership for $48k. Had I known the used market would go up I'd of waited it out. Lol.

So, this is the first time this has ever happened. Went by CarMax to verify that the offer they sent me was correct, and apparently there was an error.

They sent me an updated price today of $52,000. Which is in line with what Carvana and Vroom have offered.

The dealer I bought the Supra from, City Toyota in Daly City have offered $53,000.

This is my problem. I've figured out a way to get in and out of the car without causing much pain, but I just feel like this issue has sucked all the joy out of it for me. I drove it this morning to the chiropractor and while it's still every bit as fast as it was the day I bought it, I just couldn't enjoy it without wondering if I'm going to hurt myself again.

Maybe this is just me being paranoid? At this point, I don't want to sell it for $52-53k. If I could get $55k for it or near that I'd have a good chunk of equity to put away towards whatever I decided to get next.

Thoughts?

I decided to sell the car myself. Listed it here on the forums as well as a few other places. Hoping that it can go to someone that can appreciate it and use it better than I'm able to right now.
