I had the exact opposite experience with my 2004 Mazda 3 HB. I'm not kidding or exaggerating, I drove the car like I stole it every day, was in a country with relaxed speeding rules, and I've never ever had any problems with any part of the car. Drove it in total for 9 years. Some idiot crashed head on. Bumper, radiator, etc. got changed, still was strong and reliable like new...
Colleagues have CX5 CX9. Both are enjoying the car since and despite the lower price tag it comes with all the bells and whistles...
I don't know your experience, but maybe tires/alignment/etc sucked??
Mazda is relatively small company, yet I worked with them thru different commodities and they're not so relaxed in requirements nor validation...
Perhaps you got a lemon, which several people with Supra's also had and I'm sure many with BMW's...
In short, I've faith in Mazda still waiting for that RX-9 though Darn EPA

I had a '17 MX-5 RF GT....Was nimble and fun to drive in the twisties but gutless as hell....

I find my 3.0 Supra brings the best of both worlds together...both nimble and fast...

Both cars are sexy as hell, draw quite a bit of attention, and do seem to share similar design cues!

I completely understand. I love my 2.0 but there is “something” missing. It’s not power or handling as that feels great. It’s most likely the manual. I have had a lot of cars, hands down favorite was frs however that was the “little engine that couldn’t”. I am thinking of trading in for a 2021 type r which I know will be slower but I get 2 seats back and handling along with what appears to be great resale value. I did not like the new Z but have a feeling it will kill some Supra sales especially 2.0 for sure. Hey if anyone from here went from Type r to Supra would love to hear your thoughts

Drove a handful of cars last weekend, including finally getting to drive a Type R, trying to find a fun car for my wife, since she hates her X3 M Comp (traded her STI for that). The Type R is probably THE vehicle I was looking forward to driving most, after having sat in one of those brilliant Recaros on the dealer floor when they first came out. Refused to pay over MSRP, though, so never bought one.

With all of the incredible things reviewers have said about them, I definitely went in expecting a lot, and.... WOW, I was massively disappointed! Here's the good and bad -

Good:
1 - Those Recaros are absolutely amazing. Best seats I've sat in.
2 - Trunk space in a fun car. SO MUCH trunk space - I'd argue more than any properly fun car in the past bunch of years. TONS more than a Focus RS, and I'd say almost certainly more than the Golf R or STI hatch.
3 - The front looks great.
4 - Rain started about 15 min into our test drive, which made me very happy. I'm glad to report that the driving experience was NOT destroyed by the rain, like it was in my old GTI. The traction control system is very good at limiting slip without completely destroying acceleration.

Bad:
1 - STEERING FEEL. There was virtually none - even with those garbage 20" wheels. Certainly more than my wife's X3 M Comp, but barely on-par with the Supra, at best. You're not going to learn anything about what's going on with the tires from that steering wheel, period. This is likely due to how they decoupled everything in the front-end to combat torque steer, but it ruins the entire driving experience.
2 - Felt lethargic as hell. REALLY bad, at any speed, in any gear. It accelerated decently quick, but there was no torque feel to it at all - the Focus RS we also drove that day felt like a rocket, by comparison.
3 - Noise. Reminds me of the BRZ. Virtually no noise from the exhaust, but the engine made so much noise (not the good kind), that it rattled a bunch of stuff in the dash from ~3-5k RPM.
4 - Interior. Buzzy, rattles, just very low build quality overall. Honestly very surprised and disappointed by this, since my 2008 Civic Si I had was definitely on the other end of the spectrum.
5 - The rear end, minus the spoiler, is just a train wreck, in my opinion.

Honestly, I've now driven everything that I would buy in the current car market, and I think the only new car I would replace my Supra with (stupid decisions or winning the lottery aside) would be another STI. Without spending Porsche money, there really is no other car on the market with the kind of steering feel and overall chassis communication that car has. In all honesty, the Focus RS is the only thing I've driven in recent years (again, without spending Porsche money) that comes close. I've owned an embarrassingly long list of cars, and there have just been so few that have hit the mark, but I really know what I'm looking for at this point.

I had a mk7 too great car all around but boring. I considered golf r but again styling was meh both interior and out. Loved my 2020 wrx however it was totaled and ended up getting wideb0dy 392 scatpak challenger. Sold that in January (wish I would have held longer). I say this cannot go wrong with gti, wrx. May wait for new wrx or sti…..but it don’t look like it’s going to be too different other than bump in power

Wow I thought type r would be better than sti. Had 2020 wrx before but not sti. May have to consider that one but may wait until new one comes out. Overall Supra is great but I know once that z drops so will my resale lol

Yeah - STI is a completely different beast from the WRX, even. The hydraulic power steering certainly helps! I too thought the Type R would be better than the STI, so I was really shocked.

Agreed about the resale once the Z comes out. I honestly kind of hate values being so high right now - it makes me think about taking that money and getting a great deal on something else, but really like the Supra at the moment. So tough when most places are still offering more than I paid, though.

It depends what environment you use the STI in. In the snow, with a set of Blizzaks, the STI is unbeatable. It's unbelievably good. On dry pavement it's somewhat boring, but that's where the Supra shines.
