Hi guys. I’m thinking of running MHD. For those of you that run MHD to tune your car, I was wondering if you always keep the wifi dongle attached to the OBD port? You would need to right so that you could change your maps on the fly? Just wondering because I saw a YouTube video where the owner wanted to use the gauges on the app but whenever he tried to lock the car the alarm would go off if he left the wifi dongle attached.

Dunno about MHD dongle, but many keep OBDLink CX/MX attached all the time with no issues, afaik..

You have to remove it. I always keep my dongle in the glovebox, comes in handy for flashing maps, logging, pulling codes and bimmercoding lol. iirc, you can code out the alarm going off when something like the MHD dongle is in the OBD port. It only does it for certain dongles, idk why... the ecutek guys and JB4 guys get away with this for some reason.

maybe MHD has keep alive or something, others detect when vehicle is off and turn dongle off?
if mhd triggers alarm, maybe it's also consuming power, hence draining the battery..

Yup, it does that. I can leave the dongle plugged in and my phone would pick up it's wifi signal even though the car has been off for a while.

Yeah my JB4 is always plugged in and it’s totally fine. Do you just plug your dongle in when you drive and remove it when you need to lock up the car?

Also, let’s say I’m driving around and have the MHD plugged in, can I use the app to instantly switch maps or do I need to stop, put the car in maintenance mode, then use the app to switch maps?

That would really suck. I hope that’s not the case.

I only plug it in when i need it.. other than that, it stays in my glovebox. If you want to switch maps, you usually have to do a hard shut off on the car (turn off car and wait 6 mins for all systems to turn off OOOOR turn off the car and hold the radio power button down til the car shuts completely off and wait 2 mins..) and then diagnostic mode for the flash. DISCLAIMER! The OTS maps for MHD are great, but their safety parameters are very sensitive so if you're low on gas, or have fuel slosh, or your rear wheels catch air, or ANYTHING that the car is NOT suppose to do, it'll kick your car into limp mode (aka 91 stage 1 or stage 2 map depending on which stage you chose.) i'll let you know that the OTS E30 stage 2 map is great enough to beat a LOT of cars, and i mean a LOT.. i recommend going custom tune though if you want your safety parameters to be less sensitive and to truly bring out the best in your car..

Great info. Thank you. I am mainly considering MHD because there are really no shops around me that tune the Supra so at least with MHD I can use the OTS maps. There are a few Ecutek shops around 2-3 hours away though and I know a few members here have used them and can recommend them.

Have you tracked the car with the OTS maps and experienced any of the problems you mentioned? That’s the only thing I can think of that might get my wheels off the ground lol.

Uhhh.... no...? Because my car would be sliding everywhere if i tracked it on those tunes. LOL, the car is a torque monster on any e blend... my rear end was already sliding around everywhere on Lap 3 when the car was bone stock lol.. i'd say talk to a custom tuner of your choice and let him know what the plans of use your car will be seeing and he/she/they will accomodate you for your needs...

Oh yeah, disclaimer, i say i'd be sliding everywhere on the track is because i live in SoCal, most of the local tracks are very technical courses, a lot more turns than there is straights.

I don’t track much. It would be my first time trying it actually if I get to go this year. I’m just looking for power at my disposal whenever I step on it. No problem to just use the stock map when at the track.

Stock map is perfect for tech tracks/ autocross. A basic pump gas map is perfect for bigger tracks, then the e blend maps are just for pure carnage on the freeway lol
Exactly what I’m looking for. ?
