Toyota referred to the engine as a 4U on a plaque on display prior to launching the car. It is not referred to as a 4U anywhere else.

All technical documentation, manuals, vehicles, and catalogs refer to it as an FA20.

Toyota uses the FA20 designation for the 86/FR-S and not 4U. :(

Jeff, you think so? Why would they advertise the "A90" moniker all over the car only to discard at production? Could the same thing be said about the "Supra" name then?
Of course this is just my experienced opinion, but I believe it is good marketing. A subtle (or not so subtle) throwback to days gone by. It's certainly possible that the project may have even been referred to as A90, but when the technical docs come out, I suspect a much more BMW-esque chassis code is what they will contain.

It's just how Toyota has done things in the past, so I expect it to continue.

Despite what I think should have happened, the Supra name isn't going anywhere.

I haven't heard even the slightest indication of it being called a 3JZ, and that probably has a large part to do with not disrespecting Yamahas contributions (they are Yamaha designed motors after all).

The A90 thing is a marketing ploy to slot the new Supra in as the newest in the line of succession, but it does not ride on a Toyota A-chassis in any way, so I'd likely agree with Jeff on most of the this. I would expect to see J29 as the chassis code.

Does Toyota have an A chassis vehicle now? Or the A chassis completely gone as of right now? I would have thought since the chassis is for the Supra, they would continue the "A" nomenclature. Then when the celica info started coming out, I was thinking if they did bring it out, and it was on the same chassis, it would fit quite nice. Bring back the GT-Four!! I'd still be buying the Supra regardless if that happened or not though lol.

I could see the car being an A-chassis if it was designated as such from the ground up, but Tada didn't start in on the A90 thing until relatively recently (years after J29/etc was on the books).

Retroactive chassis codes aren't a thing, at least not that I'm aware of...

Thanks for the reply on that A70. I've never heard of retroactive chassis either, so if it's been J29 since the beginning, then so be it. I can see where using A90 in marketing, kind of helps people draw staight to think Supra, knowing the previous AXX were Supras, and some old schoolers into the Celica(although it's been some time since it's been on that chassis).

well, it's possible that Toyota was just using J29 (BMW) for the time being and instead planned on using A90 eventually. Tada does atypical things, especially for an engineer, so things aren't necessarily impossible.

It would be nice to have some “on paper” differentiation, especially keeping inline with previous “A” series chassis’. I have a feeling they will keep that chassis code a A90. The 3JZ may not happen just because the casting on previous gens actually identified the motor as a JZ (i.e., 1JZ, 2JZ stamped on the block). However, anything is possible...
