Official Oil consumption thread: Car excessively burning oil?

Mine is a 2021, built Feb 2021. No oil issues.

How could you possibly know that? Small production changes can happen any time. For example, the piston ring supplier or design can change even in the middle of a model year. That's why we often see TSB and/or recalls that go by VIN rather than model year.

Audi had issues with oil consumption and it was fixed when they switched to a different oil wiping piston ring with a "waffle" design. If Toyota/BMW did the same, we wouldn't know unless they put out a TSB with the effective VIN ranges.

The poll here may not be scientific, but it sure looks like something is different for the 2022 cars since there seems to be almost nobody experiencing excessive oil consumption.

This is true, I actually work at a Toyota manufacturing plant. We are CONSTANTLY changing parts. The part number will be the same in most cases, but minor things may have changed. Piss poor example but, a weatherstrip may have a pink mark on it, new ones may have blue. Same part, different kanban (what we use in plant) and it'll then be documented via Vin etc. 99% of people unless inside would be clueless.

2021 at 4900 miles got my first low oil notification. Took it into dealership in November of last year and they told me that there is a 6 week period in production of the 2021 model that has known piston and rings issues which causes the oil consumption problem. Fast forward to may and about 1500 more miles on the car as I was driving it to Toyota for the work to be done I got another low oil notification. Work was “done” and I go to pick up my car and the engine sounds horrible. My car has now been in the shop since 5/10/2022 and I have no clue what to do now. The dealership has been of no help and now I need a lawyer. Any help would be appreciated as to who I should contact would be awesome

Call them and ask them to open the door and look at the date on the sticker for you.

I think this thread really needs to log dates built to help understand the exact build date that may have this issue.

Like mine doesn't have it, but it was built probably towards the end of the 21' cycle.

If and when I get the car back I will definitely update with the build date.

7/20 Build date - I burn a bit of oil on track days, none off the track but I don't push the car when on the street so... I do top off a bit after a full day on track, only had the warning light once after not adding oil after the weekend was over figure this is just normal.

Just checked my build date on my 2021. It is a 07/20 build as well and burns a qt every 500 miles. I do have a PCV leak somewhere that I will be taking care of soon. No oil under car anywhere.

Jb4 and e30 definitely accelerated the oil consumption, plus the 100 degree heat doesn’t help either.

Early 2021, 3/20 build. First oil change at 2000 miles. Just shy of 4000 miles now, two drag strip visits, many south of the border trips. Zero consumption.

Mine has a build date of 3/20 as well. Mine consumes about a quart every 4,500miles (7,500kms)

That's within the 'expected' parameters, especially if factory weight and some hard driving. The people with a real problem are burning a quart in a 3rd of those miles or less.

You went 4900mi till first oil low warning. Well within spec.

2nd after 1500 - are they checking the sensor ?

So this dealer knows a specific data point about oil issues related to manufacturing?

You need a lawyer? Are you modified? You are still in warranty. Have you contacted Toyota?

All in all, it’s starting to look like it’s piston rings causing the really bad oil consumption for some of the 2021’s.

Now the main concern for most having this issue is which dealerships can handle this type of service properly?

I know why the previous owner sold it with full PPF, HKS intake and springs. He just didn’t want to deal with it either.
