These screenshots are missing some information so this situation isn't exactly as it seems.

We've been in constant contact over the past couple of days trying to troubleshoot something we assumed was a simple no start due to common improper ECU connection. He was simultaneously messaging John and myself separately, so I requested it go to email so we can both be included in responses and aren't relaying information to each other.

As of right now, I've requested some information him this morning and have yet to hear back. I told him id handle this promptly as soon as I get everything I needed.

Apparently it was absolutely smashed. I couldn't see much of anything from the very first picture. I think someone said it came out of a totaled vehicle.
They fucking smashed his ass lol

I might just stay stock if this is this case. Apparently the motor isn’t the only thing at risk of blowing up.

There's no risk unless you receive an extremely damaged DME like OP did. Clearly the metal enclosure was making contact with the board inside and caused short circuiting. It even looks like it was dented to the point where you could see some of the solder points sticking out the enclosure. Huge red flag

Sadly this is far from the only time I've seen this. Happens a ton with many tech products (especially "renewed" or "refurbished" ones) as well.

"Please send us detailed photos of the problem or we can't help you"

"Oh you opened it up to take the photos? Sorry, once you broke the seal we can't accept a return."

Although I also understand the other side... it's not like there's a container-full of replacement ECU's to just hand out... but that sure looks like something that should have never been accepted as a donor in the first place.
