Is it worth risking putting a downpipe on my Supra and losing my warranty?

I went into a Toyota dealership with a tune and catless and still had a warranty to replace a separate issue.

Warranty is kinda pointless tbh since Toyota techs have no idea what they’re doing with these cars and will probably screw it up worse even if they eventually get the right parts in for it

Oi. So much to unpack in this thread.

First, never talk to a tech about anything other than the car. You speak with the service manage about those issues.

Second, any issue you may have with the service manager can be cleared up by going to corporate. This isn't as hard as you might think and it definitely doesn't make you a Karen or anything. You just follow normal conflict resolution by going up the food chain. The law is on your side. If it came to lawyers -- there's an act from the mid 70s that states dealers must prove a mod caused an issue.

Third, if you are that worried about price then why on earth would you ever buy a 50k+ car and why on earth would you think about modding it. 10-20 years down the road, find one of these old clunkers, and do unholy acts to it sure. But brand new 50k+ car? And you're worried about the difference in price of a catted vs. non-catted dp?

Fourth, catless dps are loud, smell of gas, bad for the environment blah blah blah. If you aren't driving a racecar then they really aren't as friendly to live with as you might think. Ever have to get up early to go pick up a friend - Blam blam blam blam driving down the alley at 5am. Ever just want to chill on your way to work and decide to just keep up with traffic? Blam blam blam blam there you are racing everyone in bumper to bumper traffic.

Fifth, man you that worried about a few hundred bucks but you're spending a few hundred just on the acoustics? I mean good gosh. Drop a few more and get a JB4 and work with someone to get a tune. Get some value out of the bolt on hunk of metal pipe.

I try not to judge but I've failed today. Pay no attention to the grumpy old man.

go armytrix catless. Sounds awesome and no check engine light. I have one. If your worried about warranty swap to stock dp everytime before you go to the dealership.

Thats a lot of work to do everytime you go to the dealership, at that point just stay with the stock DP, or go with a catted DP. In my honest opinion if the OP is so worried about retaining warranty, they should just stay stock and not take the risk with mods.

It’s more so just getting value for money. An AWE catback costing $1800 but gives no performance gains vs a $400 DP, giving some performance gains and saving $1400 to get the ECU unlocked would be worth it to me, but I’m just trying to retain the warranty for as long as I can that’s all

I've had dealers not give af about it, but others where they try to blame it on the catted aftermarket dp on my previous car. The water pump is NOT related to dp aftermarket or not, it's also a common issue on the audi a3/s3 platform. So at that point you are rolling the dice depending on the dealership, can't speak for toyota though.

I have the same predicament in the UK.
Want more sound/volume, but one of the reasons I bought the supra over other options was down to the 10 year warranty on offer. So for me, it has to be a cat back system, but will it be enough...??

Sure a cat(less) downpipe (and required remap) won't invalidate your warranty if your i-drive (entertainment system) or suspension shock fails, anything engine or transmission related will be and that's the expensive stuff.

I have a 2021 GR Supra 3.0 and want a catless downpipe just for sound, I don’t plan on tuning the car for a few years. But the stock exhaust is very quiet and want to up grade it. I talked to a dealership and the tech said if I put a DP he’ll void it, meanwhile Toyota of America said they have to prove it was the issue of the engine issues. I know a downpipe won’t cause much issue but I had a WRX that motor spun a bearing out of warranty and lose over 10k from that so I’m very cautious. Any advice is welcome thanks.
I would be less worried about your warranty and more about your emissions testing - without a tune (and possibly with a tune) you will not be able to pass and register your vehicle.

Without a tune you will have a check engine light on the dash and various catalytic converter efficient codes.

With a tune you will NOT have a check engine light, but your rear O2 check will come back as "NOT READY" and while other metrics will say "READY" this might be enough to make you not able to pass - you would have to double check your emission law.

https://www.mavehiclecheck.com/motorists-basicinfo/

To pass the emissions test:

  • 2009 and newer model year non-diesel vehicles may have a maximum of one “not ready” non-continuous monitor.
  • 2009 and newer model year diesel vehicles receiving an OBD test may have a maximum of one "not ready" non-continuous monitor.
  • If the vehicle failed the emissions test with a catalytic converter-related diagnostic trouble code, the vehicle’s catalyst monitor must be “ready” to pass the re-test.

This

At the moment I'm happy with my local toyota dealer. They seem to be knowledgeable about supras , althought haven't taken it in for a major issue.

Anytime I take it to the dealer, I clear the CEL right before. Keep in mind that if they connect to the OBD, they will be able to see the error. I do it so I don't have to hear it from the people who check the car in. The Supra tech knows I'm catless and he'll know what's the error if he connects to the OBD
