$60k down doesn’t equal an $800 car payment. Don’t but the wrecked one, you’re just in too much of a hurry
I was putting $15K down and payment should’ve been around $600 but dealer added $4K in CPO and dealer fees so car price went up along with the 7% rate I would be paying $800+

I’m guessing based on bills and stuff that you’re living at home with parents. Is there a chance that’s going to change at all because if you’re getting yourself into an 800 car payment make sure your bills aren’t going to change anytime soon
Yeah not anytime soon with the current housing market in FL

I’m confused. You stated you have saved up $60k to buy a new Supra but then complain about 7% interest rates in the same post?
$60K total savings, not just for the car. If i bought it cash that would be like all my money gone haha

PLEASE DO NOT BUY A CRASHED ONE.

I had bought WZ1DB0C0XMW035625.
~$28k + $6k + fees.
My budget was $35k total with repairs, kinda blew it out with mods.
Been procrastinating a build thread/post on it.
Prob to be flamed by the forum.

Was lucky it was 06/20 but tunable.
Its back on the road and running great.
Was somewhat lucky on the damage.
Owning it has been a dream and I wanted project car.

From a value perspective, it is absolutely terrible, even at what I paid.
I have some regret going down this path, but the journey of this project I definitely enjoyed and will cherish forever.
Think about it, it is forever branded with a salvage title.
If you're keeping very very very long term, its still a hard maybe.
There will always be something better, faster, newer, etc.

My regret is, the money could have been much better used elsewhere in an investment or whatever.
You're stuck with the car for a long time.
There is no getting out without a big financial loss.

Although, I did have alot of fun, maybe too much 😂
$35k worth of fun.... yea, questionable.
I love working my cars, this is my first sportscar, figured I make it unforgettable.

The damages dont look too bad. Test drive it and have it inspected and if it pass I say go for it.

Okay, so here's one of the main reasons these get totaled so easily. The variations of steel & aluminum (grades & thicknesses) used in the body structure on this platform are pretty staggering, and from a repair perspective, a nightmare to get back into factory specifications. To help illustrate this point, Toyota themselves bought back a crashed 2020, stripped it down, and painted each individual structural material (grade or thickness) used in a different color. The process was done solely as a teaching exercise, with the end result being donated to a leading Auto Collision Repair program at a technical school. Here's the photos they published.

well they just painted it different colors to show different materials. Wish they had a legend to go with that..
Curious about what the crumple zone material is made of, it's thickness, etc. but what am I going to do with that info ? 😂

Apparently it's CPO already, but what is the dealer doing, some flex/rigidity/etc. testing on it 😂? I suppose there are best practices they check for.

Im talking about two different cars, this car in post is the rebuilt one. I went to dealer for a 1 owner clean title one that was CPO

I would say get a 2020 for mods. As you know some 2021 model can be bench unlocked, but all models after that need a femto unlock.

Yeah I get it, I already have all the mods sitting here just need the car. So even at $35K it still wasn’t worth it to you? Damn man now I don’t know what to do lmao

Imo if you can’t afford it with a clean title then just pass for now. It would be a better financial decision to buy one for more that has a clean title (still bad decision, to be clear)

Would never catch me in a GR86, Ive put off buying clean title M2s, M3s and M4s because I wanted the supra. I guess I gotta either wait or bite the bullet with the APR.

I would be all over that thing for a track car. For a street car I would avoid. For perspective, I bought a brand new 23' 3.0 Premium.
This has been a dream of mine for a while now, buy a wrecked or flood damaged one, fix what is needed, then strip and gut the car for a cage & other track goodies. Make it a permanent, dedicated track car and never care about the branding on the title. It won't be street legal anyways with all the changes.

To me it was worth, I was looking for an experience.
I was fresh grad looking for my first sportscar for ~$35k to celebrate.
It was either a used 981 Cayman, JDM SW20 MR2, or ND2 Miata.
This was the best deal in my head at the time, very questionable now ofc.
Got a stable WFH job, tons of free time, wanting an unforgetable project car. WCGW.
2020-21 vibes, looming recession, pandemic going on, lockdown, used car prices going insane... Things werent looking good.

Made some great friends, joined some cool groups (like this forum :rofl:).
"Maybe the real treasure, was the friends we made along the way." type of deal 😂
Learned alot mechanically, exclusively only owned Toyota/Lexus, my way of branching out and trying something new like BMW but not breaking tradition "technically".

Would I do it again, absolutely not.
Was a one time experience, but had alot of fun and enjoying it so far.


Fully repaired $35k, its not not a bad deal.
Seller's margin is relatively tight on this sale, as with most rebuilt sales.
However, they get out clean from this transaction, the buyer will not...
Getting "stuck" with a working Supra isnt necessarily bad, but that commitment reduces your financial potential greatly. And facing a big penalty if you want out.

Ownership wise, some dealers will outright refuse to work on your car.
Lots of problems with recalls, alignments, parts, and such. Gets worse once you mix in a tune.
Ive prepared by getting a copy of ISTA and found some local shops to help for bigger jobs I cant handle.

My advice, just wait for the right car, not crashed preferably.
Sooner or later the Supra will reach your budget.
Especially with updates/revisions every year, older cars will decrease in value.
I took the plunge so you dont have to, im telling you, its not worth.
Get a clean title car instead.
