So… yes to all that? In all seriousness, what is stopping people from doing the same thing when you are driving away or to your destination? How about at stoplights or driving next to someone on the highway?

The fact is that car theft using relay attacks is super cheap and super easy, you can buy a $100 kit on Amazon that lets you break into (can you even call it "break into" when all you have to do is open the door?) and steal basically any modern car with no alarm or immobilizer to worry about. It happens all the time, and is increasing in frequency. It can also be easily prevented by just sticking your key in a little pouch when you're not using it. I don't understand why you're so being hostile to people taking the simplest of precautions to keep their car from being stolen?

we've created and tested these mobas here at my firm (for science). can confirm they work. no, my supra wasn't tested, but they do work on toyotas and audis

I think statistically it's extremely unlikely, perhaps never been tried? yet maybe possible, but that sounds like Fast & Furious type of sci-fi crap...

If someone did that to you, then in contrast to your previous point, you and your car would definitely need to be "important", which as you kindly reminded me of, I am not, so I'm not concerned of a "drive by" theft.

Never the less, I've seen people steal iron drain covers from the road, so that tells you what people are willing to do.

A $10 prevention item such as a faraday pouch, is worth it in my opinion to reduce risk, however erasing risk entirely is not possible and no one here is making that assertion ?

I'm confused now. They're not gathering any information, it's not like sniffing garage door opener codes where they just read the code and then play it back later when you're not around. The communication between the car and transponder key is bidirectional and encrypted, sniffing it is pointless.

In a relay attack they basically just make it possible for the car and key to communicate with each other in real time over much larger distances. So the car thinks the key is right by the door or sitting in the driver's seat when it's actually in a drawer in your house. They need an active comm link between the car and the key (passing through a pair of networked laptops and RF transceivers) for this attack to work, which is why putting the key in an RF blocking pouch or box when you're not using it eliminates the risk.

It's not a far off imaginary scenario, it's cheap and super easy to do. All someone has to do is drive through a neighborhood, see a car they like, stick a device by the kitchen window (from there it can communicate with your transponder key pretty much anywhere in the house), then open up the car door, get in, and drive off. It happens all the time. Here's a video showing how quick and easy it is:

It doesn't even have to be at your house, they could see your car sitting in a restaurant parking lot and do the same thing through the restaurant window. Automatic keyless entry/pushbutton start systems are incredibly insecure, they're just one small step away from leaving your doors unlocked with the keys in the ignition. An RF blocking pouch is an easy fix that costs like $10 and takes almost no effort to use.

This wasn't far from where i live, me neighbour was targeted for his bmw 320 last week, luckily didn't notice the supra few houses down.

He had Faraday pouch and saved the car.

We bought one immediately after your guys post and a box to keep our keys in. All of our keys were just sitting in my laundry room in a basket. I’d much rather they sit in one of these microwave like boxes, lol. It was inexpensive on Amazon. One less thing for me to worry about. You guys are awesome ??

I think it’s similar to having your credit cards in a RFID wallet. My wife’s credit card got skimmed last time in Vegas. She had her purse next to her at the slot machines and the card in and out. It’s a simple fix. Yes, they could knock us both over the head and take her credit card. But most thieves are cowards and looking for the easiest way to live their filthy lifestyles. It’ll be easy for me to keep my key in one of those pouches and keys in the box.

Meanwhile, got a free car wash (FL rain). It poured while I went into a kava/kratom bar (college daughter works at the local tea place). Funny thing being in the subtropics. It can pour like all get out for 30 minutes or less, then it’s sunny, like it never happened. Typical this time of year.

Also, I can now pull up on parking stops since I’m back at OEM height. Whoops ?, didn’t mean todo that, lol.
