I’m currently looking into getting a BM3 tuner and was wondering if I need to get a bench unlock if my car was built in November 2019, I bought it band new in June 2020

Covered almost daily.

October 2019 was the first flash update that locked the ECUs preventing a OBD unlock.

Any car that has this October update will need a bench unlock, regardless of the build date.

You need a bench unlock and I would recommend MHD+ and EcuTek over bm3.

Is MHD just and alternative to Bm3 that you would recommend instead, If so why is it better?

MHD offers better support , like if you need help type of support.

Really depends on what your tuner prefers to use.

If you don't have full-screen carplay, you probably don't need a bench unlock.

What’s the alternative to full screen? I originally had it as split screen and then it changed a couple years ago and I couldn’t find the setting again

Before the updates that lock the DME, Carplay would not be full screen, it would take up about 3/4 width.

Did you ever have the brake recall or any recall done at the dealer?

I never did any recalls but it’s possible the dealer could have maybe updated it without telling me?

Possibly and if you do have full screen carplay, 99% sure you need a bench unlock. You can actually do this yourself if you want and sometimes it ends up being cheaper than paying someone.

MHD has an at-home unlocker and I believe it is for MHD only. https://mhdtuning.com/pages/mhd-unlocker

Mission Tuner has an unlocker and it unlocks for any tuning software. I have used this myself and the unlock process takes about 40 secs after plugging it into the DME. https://missiontuning.com/products/mLinkG1-MLink-At-Home-DME-Bench-Unlock

Those two are the most straightforward.

There is a third option that is much cheaper but you need a cable/dongle and a laptop. https://www.bimmertuningtools.com/product/b58-quickflash/

i was gonna buy the mission tool but when I went to configure it I realized the price increases from 350 to 550 once you select the Supra! I bought the BM3 license and WiFi adapter so I will verify whether I need the bench unlock once that comes in! It’s definitely lookin like I will have to get it done though.

Make sure you are just looking at the unlocker, not the tune plus unlocker. They recently redid their website and it's kind of a dark pattern that they spit you into the first combo.

$350 without battery, $370 with. I just bought the battery to make sure it worked properly with the unit.

Thank you for helping with my oversight, I was curious as to why they advertised it as $350 if the price was required to go up! I’m gonna hold off and check with the BM3 tuner to be sure I do need it even though there is a 99% chance I have to .
