Hi,

With previous Supras it was possibly to swap the steering wheels with those from other Toyota/Lexus models or aftermarket ones. Does anyone know if this is possible with the MKV?

Reason for asking is that due to physical disability I need the cruise controls on the right side of the wheel (Ironically the reason I've never owned a BMW) and was hoping there was an alternative OEM or even aftermarket wheel that offered this? It probably sounds silly but this is the only thing holding me off buying an MK5 currently.

Thank you.

its not possible, you may want to buy a mustang or WRX instead.

You're going to be able to swap BMW wheels in and retain most OEM functionality. I believe this depends on the ISTEP version of the body domain controller. I've got a '22, all but 3 buttons work on my G8x LCI wheel. Some folks claim full functionality on '25+.

Technical details: The way the steering wheel controls work is over a protocol called LIN. A master (the BDC) explicitly queries the state of each specific button on the steering wheel, and the slave (the buttons) will respond. It's a "speak when you're spoken too" kind of relationship. Not a "button sends a signal to a car. Car queries the state of the buttons, which makes it a royal pita to try to work with.

Companies have built protocol decoders and control emulators (zestek, JQ/Madtrace, etc.) and sell their wheels with OEM functionality as products. Their wheels maintain most, if not, all OEM functionality, but are definitely not what you're looking for as you lose your airbags :D

There is almost a zero chance OEM Toyota and Lexus steering wheels will work as a drop in replacement. Everything from airbags to connectors to controls are going to be vastly different.

Your best bet is aftermarket BMW with a custom upholstered Toyota airbag if you're not happy with the OEM wheel. Check out @stormgreysupra, they might be able to work something out that you'll be happy with.

Best bet is a BMW G series swap and having a coder do some custom work to flip around the buttons. Can't promise I can do it but I would be happy to give it a shot and talk to my coder. Shoot me a dm or reach out via our site leatherwerksauto.com

I was thinking the same, flip the controls left to right...
