Nice straw man.

"I happen to work with the William Leham Injury Center doing research on crash safety equipment with BMW for over 2 decades." does however = qualified to discuss seat belts, which is the topic here per the thread title.
That comment was for the other guy. Also, not the topic. Stated several times.

Ffs, does anybody know if the Type A seat belt can be manually locked and its part number? I'd appreciate it!

Thank you!

Here's the screen shot from the manual. Type B shows an extra electrical connector which should be for automatic tensioning.

I found the part number for 2.0 supra https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~belt~assy~fr~seat~73220-waa01.html

The one I have is 73220-WAA02.

Now I just need someone with this model confirm if it can be manually locked :)

Procedure:
1. Pull the belt on the driver side slowly until the end.
2. Start retracting it slowly and see if you can hear clicks.

If you can hear clicks, the belt should be locked and you shouldn't be able to pull it out.

My gut feeling is that the type B seat belt might failover to a type A, in the case of loss of communication. It might be worth trying unplugging that connector, and seeing if it behaves like that

Good idea, I'll try it out. Thanks!

If anybody's interested in this topic, I think I figured it out.

I did some more reading and realized that there are several orthogonal systems (more or less) which are a part of the more general SRS system.

Seat belts have several retractor technologies:
* ELR (Emegency Locking Rectractor) - Activates when the belt is pulled with above certain G's
* ALR (Automatic Locking Rectractor; the name is a bit misleading imo) - this is the one I'm looking into; you can manually adjust the tension
* Motorized Retractors - removes slack (increases tension) during 'critical driving situations'
* Retractor w/ Pyrotechnic Pretensioner - activates after the car senses a crash and is used to remove slack from the belt (increase tension)

Additionally, there's Retractors w/ Load Limiter which activate after the belt has already locked. Its purpose is to limit the potential harm if the forces exceed certain thresholds. This is an advanced version of the 'seat belt breaking' when exposed to the threshold forces.

ALR, in the recent years, found it's way to being used for securing child seats and that's why you can manually lock passenger side seat belts and not the driver side ones. #TIL

Again, for folks in the back: Being locked and snug in the seat just before the crash is a good thing :p

Enough theory, now for some practice.

After a bit of disassembly, cuts, broken clips and a few lost bolts, I got to the outer seat belt assemblies on both sides.

From the looks of it, they are the same. Except for the bent tab above the bolt which I'm guessing is to make sure the sides can't be switched up. This is easily fixable with some pliers.

So, it should be possible to use the assembly from the passenger side on the driver side, or to get the get a passegner side assembly from the right hand drive versions :)

UPDATE:

I've ordered the belt for the passenger side, adjusted the tabs and it fit right in on the driver side. The car is not throwing any error codes, seems it's working as expected.
