Hi,

Couple questions:

  1. With EcuTek can I have access to the tables, like if I want to create my own map, can I do that?
  2. This tool is an offline windows binary, like, no need for the cloud or to be connected at all times right?
  3. Do we have direct access to the firmware image? Like if am working with a tuner remotely, can he send me the map and I can flash it?
Right now I am with BM3, but I would like to have an offline option for tuning.

Thanks.

1. The maps are encrypted and only the tuner can open them. EcuTek's editor is also for tuners only. You would need to purchase the tuning suite to edit the tables.
2. This is a windows binary. You do not need an active internet connection to use EcuTek
3. You receive a .bin file that the software will program into the ECU. When we work with someone remotely we collect their informatoin and build a custom map for them, have them log to verify the vehicle is running correctly, and then we adjust the tune and send another file.

If you have any questions please dont hestitate to reach out to me. =)

Thanks for the fast reply! I may explore this option depending on by budget this month.

How much does it cost to purchase the tuning suites to edit the maps?
This makes me really, really dislike Ecutek..... $700+ and I canā€™t even edit maps or tune my own car? Garbage! Iā€™ll bet the tuning suite is another $500

Jesus man. I mean with Hondata Kpro, it was like $1200 and you can make as much custom maps as you want and Hondata releases OTS or base maps all the time. You had full control of the tunes and etc. I donā€™t get why BMW canā€™t do stuff like that? Is it just the companies trying to make thousands off of us?

In this case itā€™s 100% Ecutek. Iā€™ve had the same issues with them on other platforms. IIRC we will have to pay additional costs for racerom once that releases as well. Iā€™ve always hated Ecutek for this, but it does seem like the Ecutek cars run smoother than the BM3/MHD cars from what Iā€™ve read and heard. Iā€™ll most likely go with Ecutek either way but Iā€™m not happy about the cost!

RaceRom will not be a charge with us. We wil be upgrading all of our early users to RaceRom patches (which is time consuming) for free. People that buy early won't get screwed. If people want custom RaceRom adjustments there may be a small fee. But If you have multiple maps and want them added into map switch we will be doing this free of charge.

Hi,

I am the calibrator over at GoodSpeed. And I also tune a very wide variety of platforms. This ECU/DME is far more complex than say a KPro. Ecutek also spends a lot of time and money writing custom code to inject into the factory unit to do things like map swithching and such. This ecu has over 80,000 tables to edit. This is a massive under taking to go through hex and define tables and figure out what is actually needed to function. I have access to the majority of these tables and have spent over 1,000 hours working on this ecu. I also tune a lot of other platforms and on things like kpro i dont care about locking my tables. They are just simple fueling and ignition tables. But even if you could open these maps you most people would never have any idea what they were even looking at.

Here is a simplified top view of the airflow model for just cyliinder fill alone on this engine. This is extremly simplified.

EcuTek tries its best to provide training to its tuners. They do webinars, and reading material and spend extensive time figuring out how this logic works. This isn't a simple set the boost level and adjust timing. The other day I was looking for a solution to a problem and i found it after sifting through over 1,000 tables. This took an extensive time.

So if you were interested in self tuning your car I am more than happy to help you out. The package is however not $500. They had a self editing abillity on the BRZ that i feel was priced very nicely for the quality of the software (i have tuned pretty much every bit on the brz platform and even helped define some of the open source maps!). That ecu in its entirety is probably as complex as just the fuel trim model in this ECU.

Ive done hundreds of flashes on say BM3, over weeks and weeks just trying to figure thins out. With that being said I doubt people will really have a desire to edit their own tables, as it is going to be quite a bit over most folks heads.

I was more talking about editing the set parameters maybe like hot boost cut, low boost cut settings. Lean protection settings. Not sure if you ever will have boost by gear on these ecu setup? IAT vs IGN retard setting tables, injector size settings, disabling secondary o2 to pass emissions, and etc. Maybe electronic boost controller table where you can turn it off and run off the wg spring or adjust the pressure or run it off boost by gear. stuff like that. and the stuff you mentioned, holy cow! Definitely sounds like super complex vs what I am used to!!
I wasnā€™t planning to go in and start messing with the major tables. As far as knock detection. Do the datalog detect that? And is there an indicator when the motor is knocking? Are you also allowed to save your datalog and review it? I been 15 years out of the game and this high tech bmw is new to me. And thank you for taking the time out to tell us more about this.

Can you dumb it down for exactly what Racerom exactly is? I know most of us just wants to slap the software on and make power. But I actually like to learn as much as I can with the software system and how it works and etc. I have dealt with Hondata since 2006 and have been very comfortable setting up different maps for say daily driving, drag way, and street uses. I know this is way over complex than Hondata. If there is a FAQ. It would be nice.

These ecus do no thandle boost like kpro does. The engine looks at airflow much different and doesn't care about how much PSI is in the engine. So settigs similar to what your asking are so complex. The timing for example has a simple flow chart to what i showed for thermal management. Timing is balanced with modeled components suhc as the actual manifold, valves, pistons, turbine etc for damage thresholds. So when things warm up the car changes fueling, turbine presure, ignition angle, fuel firing angle. None of these are simple tables to edit. This would take extensive experience to be able to edit these as an end user.

Boost by gear there are ways to do it with the OEM tables if it was needed.

Timing on this ecu is complex. The engine will do many things to verify knock, it is very complex and if i recall it uses both knock sensors and ion detection from the spark plug its self to check for combustion stability and it will alter the parameters in the strategy to test to see if it can stabalize its self.

You can also log every parameter i can, and view it. Ecutek does come with a simple but quite useful datalogger. If there is enough interest i can write some guides on reading some basics in logs. But i also want to prevent people from over analyzing the logs thinking this engine works with set boost targets and such. There are a number of signs for knock and even a basic knock flag that does show up at times. Buth there are earlier signs of combustion stability issues and such. EcuTek is also developing custom logging logic to log internal data that is not available through the standard dataloggin available on the market. For datanuts this will be quite nice. =)
