Traditionally, yes. Also A70 has already said BMW and Toyota will apart ways after the Z4 and Supra runs through its production cycle and the next model will be either done in-house or a partnership with Mazda.
Did he explicitly say that though? What I mean by that is, y'all don't think the B58 or some technologies that was shared during this codevelopment project won't move on to the A100 Supra?

I truly love thee B58, iDrive, and the ZF 8-speed automatic that's in the A90 GR Supra. @A70TTR has been off these forums for a while, but when he comes back, I hope he sees these things.

Firstly, the "SupraConnect" (*coughs* iDrive *coughs*) infotainment system is literally the best thing that has happened to Toyota in terms of interior ergonomics so far. I really hope A70TTR encourages the guys at Toyota that they add the SupraConnect system to every single Toyota out there. It's intuitive, reliable, and really fun to use. The current Toyota infotainment systems are a D rating at best and they just bring the whole interior down with it.

Also, the ZF 8-speed automatic is THE BEST automatic that happens to not be a dual-clutch transmission. They can't put your typical Toyota/Lexus automatic after that even though the 10-speed is really solid too. The ZF 8-speed transmission is a godsend. They need to keep it forever like the iDrive system.

Lastly, like I previously mentioned in these forums, it's way better to improve on what's already the best engine out there on the market right now. PLEASE make it your own and use what you've learned and take the shortcut. It's right in front of y'all. I was totally welcoming of this project once I knew what it was capable of. Toyota should continue to soldier on with the B58 and make it even better and better. Make it a true Toyota B58 engine (or call it a G30E-GTS or something like that). They've already added their own touches and modifications in the current GR Supra as well. So why not continue with this engine? It's proven to be reliable, smooth, sounds great and feels great too.

If I were Toyota, I'd be proud of this engine continuing on to the A100 Supra just like I'd be proud of this amazing GR Supra given the circumstances that the two engineering teams were given (in particular Toyota where they weren't going to just spend several billions of dollars on just one car after the nameplate ceased production for ~20 years).

Unless some agreement was made I doubt BMW will allow Toyota to farther use any of their tech on future models especially if they are pulling the plug on their own Z4. Besides, Mazda has a new upcoming straight six motor. :D

I don't know why people are so happy about Mazda making a 6 cylinder. BMW makes the best ones. The B58 has won multiple best engine awards. In my opinion dropping a known amazing BMW power plant for an unknown Mazda one, is a huge step backwards.
I wonder if you will still feel that way after your warranty is up. :p I have previously owned my fair share of BMWs.

It doesn't have to be an I6. I wouldn't complain if they went with the hybrid version of the V35A that is a rumored to be used on the next Tundra/Sequoia and LC/LX.

I've had Mazda rotaries and Subaru EJ's lol. BMW reliability will be a significant step up. And who's to even say Mazda will share their 6 cylinder? They wouldn't make one if they didn't have a car of their own planning to put it in. And which will most likely be a direct Supra competitor.
I hope they stick with BMW. Especially if Toyota gets access to the S series.

This may sound crazy, but why not use a Toyota motor in the next Supra? If the Supra doesnā€™t eventually break away from using an inline 6, then another manufacturer will forever be relied on for development
That's the Supra way since previous models had help from Yamaha and Lotus :dunno:

The mk2 had help from lotus and the 1jz head had help from Yamaha.

Toyota backed themselves into a corner for the A100 assuming BMW is no longer in the picture. The A90 chassis is incredible and I donā€™t see the A100 being an improvement if they are using a Mazda/Lexus commuter car platform. It would be great if they use the space frame chassis that Mazda patented, but thereā€™s no way an inline 6 will fit.

Either scenario (given that the A100 isnā€™t indefinitely discontinued after 2025) means something about the car is compromised, whether it be the chassis or inline 6 ā€œheritage.ā€

@2JZ-No-Sh*t I was about to quote and respond to your post using my own answer but I felt like this is the better way to go. Nice post @Dannyvandelft.

Why not 6 series?

There was once a time when the 6 series based off the Z4/Supra's architecture was planned to target the 911 (which is why the current 8 series is the size as the former 6 series) but never came to fruition.

Strangely enough a render of a BMW coupe with Supra styling exists well before Supra prototypes existed.

Edit: Forgot to link article. Notice how this was about a year before we first saw Supra mules.

Isn't the new 6 really just the renamed 8 series coupe? Which is reportedly getting the axe after it finishes it production run.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/07/29/rumor-bmw-to-axe-several-models-including-8-series-and-z4/

With all the reports of the Z4, 8 series, and M midengine supercar being dropped I think the whole new 6 will be a 911 fighter won't be happening anytime soon.

Yes the current 6 series moved up to the 8 series to compete with the S class coupe so a 911/AMG GT competitor could take itā€™s place as a 6 series.

It wonā€™t/didnā€™t happen, that article was from 4 years ago.

I think that's a silly thing to say. It's like saying the RX7/8 has tons of issues, therefore the Miata must also be a nightmare. You're right, again just dropped in a hybrid V35A and call it a day.

Even if the Supra gets the S58 it will more than likely be expensive and or a very limited short run as hinted by both A70 and Bestcar.

I didn't mean it like that lol. I just meant I'm used to engines with bad reliability. But the B58 isn't one of them. Rotaries and EJ's blew left and right bone stock. I haven't heard of any B58's going stock. As far as reliability down the line, it's way too early to tell.
