  1. Toyota confirmed 3 sports car lineup: Toyota exec wants to bring back Celica, MR2

"Compete against top-class world competitors" - translation: "it's going to cost you a fortune". :D (Isn't the Supra being built on a "designated sports car platform" as a "pure, genuine sports car"?)
  2. Toyota confirmed 3 sports car lineup: Toyota exec wants to bring back Celica, MR2

Toyota's a huge company with very deep pockets, it's not Mazda or Subaru - several new models will be in development at any one time. Plus any new development costs would be shared with Subaru. But those weird concepts Toyota did seemed to be nothing more than amuse-bouches, PR stunts intended...
  3. Toyota confirmed 3 sports car lineup: Toyota exec wants to bring back Celica, MR2

The fact that after 5 1/2 years of production there has not been one spy shot of a second-gen 86 prototype or even mule makes me pessimistic about the possibility of a new one. It seems as if Toyota's going to go the 370Z route, and stick to making minor updates to the current model until sales...
  4. Scion FR-S / Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ

Yeah, the 86's front fascia after the facelift - the designer must have been on a very bad acid trip. The facelifted BRZ, though - that is really attractive.
  5. Scion FR-S / Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ

IMO they made a terrible mistake going with that nasty flat-4. It needed at a minimum 25 more hp, it sounded horrible through most of its rev range, and its mid-range pull was crippled by a big torque dip. I was in a group buy at launch - and after a test drive I was out thanks to that engine.
  6. Interview Questions for Detroit from the Fans

What would a CF roof save, maybe 100 lbs? Now add a CF hood and liftgate/trunk lid....
  7. New Toyota Supra shown to EU dealers!

A manual with toggle-able rev-matching would be a great middle ground....
  8. New Toyota Supra shown to EU dealers!

That was my thought too - there seems to be no other component that is going to save nearly as much weight being made out of an exotic material as the tub. Given what we know of the car's other specs, if it were made of conventional materials only it would probably come in at 3200+ lbs. Only a...
  9. New Toyota Supra shown to EU dealers!

Ouch - is that pricing firm now? That means in Canada it's going to be around $62-63k (based on the standard pricing differentials between us and the US). Just a grand or two below the base Vette price here, and within shooting distance of the 650 hp ZL1.
  10. What will the FT-1 be called? Supra trademark revived by Toyota!

Damn! Gone already....I thought of a nice riff on this I might go for if I get the car, but I am not putting it up here to have it stolen!
  11. New Toyota Supra shown to EU dealers!

One concern triggered by that low weight: If Toyota is forced to use a lot of relatively exotic materials to attain it (say in a carbon fibre driveshaft, or in the heavy use of aluminum in body panels and suspension components) it could push the car's price up considerably, well into BMW territory.
  12. New Toyota Supra shown to EU dealers!

You just made my week, thanks! Obligatory at this point:
  13. Crickets... give us some news Toyota!

If you limit yourself to RWD sportscars and exclude hot hatches, pony cars, and coupes/sedans like the M235i, there really are few comparable cars to go to if you can't wait (at least for the lower-end variant of the Supra). The BRZ/86 and Miata have far less power; the Corvette, Jag F type, and...
  14. Spied: Toyota benchmarking Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997) for new Supra?

Nearly all of the big shootouts/COTYs find the Cayman has better handling characteristics than the 911, and the same holds for the M2 to M4 comparison - so why not use the higher benchmark? Plus the Supra appears to be more in the size, weight and price class of these cars than that of the 911...
  15. Spied: Toyota benchmarking Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997) for new Supra?

Meh. Wrong benchmarks - these are (relatively speaking) big, heavy luxury GTs these days. Much better benchmark choices would have been the M2 and Cayman - along with the Alfa 4C for the ultimate in road feel and nimble handling. Maybe that is part of the reason the CEO had them go back to the...
  16. Why I Think Everyone is Wrong About the MKV (Video)

LOL, my bad, I guess I haven't been quite as zealous as others here about viewing every available spyshot.
  17. Why I Think Everyone is Wrong About the MKV (Video)

There are differences to be found - haven't seen other photos with the heavily padded rear shoulders seen below for example. The latest high-res photos show clear evidence of some extra cladding to somewhat disguise body shapes - standard industry practice for a car more than a year out from...
  18. Why I Think Everyone is Wrong About the MKV (Video)

His example does look better in that respect, but of course different prototypes may have varying levels of padding etc. added - even the same prototype might drop parts of its bulky coverings as time passes, that's common practice. Anyways, prototypes usually don't start running around in...
  19. Why I Think Everyone is Wrong About the MKV (Video)

The longer, lower, wider renderings do look more exotic, but the tradeoffs are greater weight, loss of agility and ease of maneuvering, and poorer visibility. I'd rather sacrifice the exotic bit if needs be to get a smaller, lighter (and cheaper) car. Speaking of Nissan - someone in my garage...
  20. Why I Think Everyone is Wrong About the MKV (Video)

^^ BMW: they make them reliable enough to get them through the lease/warranty period without having major issues that BMW would have to fix on their dime (in the vast majority of cases) - but after that it's a real crap shoot from what I've read. Alfa is a joke - even the cars reviewers are...
