Yes and no.
It is absolutely a thing to have too much power, especially on the track, and especially if you've ignored all of the other mods you need to do to support that power.
This car is so easy and cheap to make insane power with that it's easy to get to the point where the car is all...
I ran my old STi catless for 12 years lol. Around town in Denver I never felt bad about it because compared to the nasty diesel 18-wheelers, busses, dually diesels, trains, giant SUVs, factories, coal fired powerplant, etc. it was a very small drop in the bucket.
I visited a few national...
If I could spend $400 for 20-30 HP on my little NA Porsche I wouldn't have purchased the Supra lmfao.
I think it's important to remember the percentages we're talking about here. 25 HP on my 250 HP stripped out Cayman that weighs about 2800 lbs with her fatass driver (me) is a 10% increase and...
My 2020 put down about 350hp/360ft*lbs on the stock tune.
Stage 1 with literally zero mods other than the dyno tune was about 420hp/480ft*lbs when he was done.
When I discussed future upgrades with my tuner he recommended a Pure-800 with a downpipe and a manifold. He said those mods will get...
For what it's worth, Botti said a catless dp on the stock turbo on 93 adds maybe 20-30hp from his experience. He said it's just not worth it unless you're upgrading the turbo. He and I both come from Subarus where an aftermarket dp makes a HUGE difference, but he said the B58 isn't anything...
Yeah, I specifically mentioned adding ethanol fueling in my quoted post to make it to 500 WHP.
The reason why I posted what I did is to show that you can achieve really good power on the factory setup with just a good dyno tune. Spending upwards of $4k-$5k on "supporting" mods like CBE, catless...
This is why I really don't care about numbers and didn't bother with the "final numbers" print out from my tuner.
One big thing to keep in mind is that the dyno in CT where I had the tuning done is for all intents and purposes at sea level, and the tune was done on a 50 degree dry sunny day...
I had an FP Green in my '05 STi. Both on my EJ257 and the Version 7 EJ207 I ended up swapping in when I blew up the EJ257 ?. Great turbo that made serious HP at 5280' ASL, but it was a little laggy at altitude. I would absolutely run a turbo like that on the A90 at sea level where I am now.
I mean, it's an intake manifold and an intercooler. If you think about it that way I guess it justifies the $4k.
It's still a lot of money. On par with a good set of coilovers.
We'll see how well my tune holds up over the summer with track days in the high 90s. I'm worried that IATs are going to be a problem. A downpipe will help, and manifold would completely eliminate the concern.
