I discovered you can't actually see the sensor using a scope. You can see the adjusting screw but not the actual sensor.

Agreed. They're definitely nervous about replacing these. It's not the first one I've seen on these boards. The accident avoidance system went out on my Supra when it had 1500 miles on it so it's not the first time I've had an issue with it. I'll bring that up if I have to go to Toyota Corporate.
