This is a stupid question, but how do you know if your oil pump is failing.

I have a 2020 unit, and this afternoon it showed low oil after 3000 miles, asking me to top up 1 quart , during this time, it refused to do the full measurement and stopped around 20%, and just said oil at minimum level, top up 1 quart.

I filled it, and then when i tried to measure after, it couldn't complete/go beyond 21% for like more than 7 times.

In the evening, i tried to measure, and it suddenly did, and i tried again the next morning after going for some spirted driving. It refused to after the drive, but completed it again after letting it cool down for 15 mins.

When the test is going on, i could hear a whirring sound at the back, which i imagine is the sound of the oil pump, pumping.

Now im kind of lost as too whether i should replace it now, or wait until its starting to fail, and im wondering what does starting to fail sound like (as from what i read, its a disaster if it fails). would be accurate that i would hear the oil pump whirring sound if it was failing during a normal drive as it would need to work hard to maintain oil pressure?

Is there signs in terms of codes, sounds, notifications etc etc? Im thinking of going to a shop to measure oil pressure as i dont have an obd.
Just change it out or sell it. You have the #1 symptom for an early model car with a plastic pump of no or sporadic oil measurement attempts.

Some updates, for people with similar issues.

My measuring works, but the oil temp needs to be below 100c for it to work. if its significantly higher than that, it cancels at 20-23%, if its not hot enough, it wont allow measurement. The car also needs to be on a flat surface

From what im reading on reddit, the oil needs to be at temperature of 60-100c for the oil measure to work, if its at operating temperature of 110-120C, it will not work. You can find the oil temp via the hidden menu.

If your pump failed, you would not be able to measure it at all, regardless of temperature., you will also likely hear a whirring sound of the oil pump consistently while driving (you can hear an example of it when doing the oil measurement test), and if its serious, you will see an oil pressure light come out.

In general, the oil pumps fail mainly for cars that are in parts of the world with cold climates, due to constant drastic expansion and contraction.

I live in a tropical country that is hot and humid all year round, so its more unlikely to happen to me.

Definitely going to change it at some point, but since its working. Ill just keep it for now, and do a measurement weekly to ensure there is no issues.

Ok so if I understand you correctly then your particular car has a 5degree C operating window to measure the oil qty? I think from memory the owners manual says 30 min driving which should bring the oil temp into the 60-100C range (I always test it after a drive) which concurs with what you have said but if your car needs to be at 105C and anything over 110C won't work then it looks like your car has an issue. Going by your temp figures you are above the 60-100C threshold which is quite a broad range and seems reasonable. I never have any issues with qty testing and I'm pretty sure my oil temp when I test it would not be over 100C.

yeah i turned on the secret menu to check.

I live in a tropical country with ambient temp of around 28c, after leaving the car overnight, the moment i start up the engine, its at 55C basically instantly. It hits 100-110c in 15 mins, and basically stays there.

So i need to either test it after 10 mins of driving, or let the car rest for 20-30 mins (with the engine off) after driving it, before testing.

Gonna just test oil pressure every 2 days for now, as changing the pump is a pretty big piece of work.
