The manual does specify a 1200 miles break-in period. I've had my car for three weeks and I only have 145 miles. :(
Its time to go on a long drive with hills and variable speed limits. I cranked out 1200 miles in 2 weeks. None of this 1200 miles in a year business.

Yep, put 1500 miles on it between Sept 17 and Thanksgiving. Then #SendIt

I was pretty careful, super tame the first 100+ miles, started opening up a bit to sport and manual mode touching 4.5k rpm a few times from 100-400 miles then today an arrogant Alfa 4C was baiting me so I gunned it a bit to 6k for a very short stretch... Let her cool down for a few miles after that.

I felt kinda bad but then remembered the posts on here about importance of opening it up once in a while during break-in!

I drove mine hard basically everyday with lots of redline pulls, no launch control launches yet though.
Just hit 1200 miles, gonna go cruise down to a San Diego GT-R meet with some friends tomorrow morning then taking it to get its first oil change.
Oil still reporting max, so let's see if I broke her :)

What actually can be the worst cause of a bad engine break-in? i'm getting quite worried in the last couple of days, currently on 1000miles, what i do the most when i full throttle it sometimes its just in 2nd gear or 3rd/4th for a second or so to hear the pops etc, but nothing really else. never took it to redline yet or done any launch control.

is this a bad thing? i just love that sound. :D

I drove conservatively for the first 1250, but did go over 4500 rpm and 100 mph a few times TBH. As long as you don't beat on it all the tIme you should be OK. Lots of people will disagree with hard/easy break-in. But I have 6500 miles since September on a JUN 2020 build and no oil issues so far (oops ... JINX! ??‍♂).

B58 is not a M engine. From BMW Factory M340i or non true M cars already broken in from the factory.

This thing is controlled entirely by computers. If the manufacturer was really concerned about engine break-in, why wouldn't they just electronically control the engine to 4500 rpms and disable the sport mode button until 1200 miles?

Good point but to answer why they just don't electronically control the engine is because they would have to spend money developing and testing code that does that. Cheaper to just write it in the owner's manual.

Did engine break-in as dictated in manual, accomplished in about 2.5 weeks, then slowly raised the RPMs by 500 each run. Finally after reaching redline tried it out in sport mode and accelerate, very quick car as stock! Haven't even tried launch control yet.

Lotus does this with their cars., Have to go to dealer to get it unlocked after break-in period.

“Modern cars don’t need break in” ranks among the worst internet advice I’ve ever seen, demonstrates an ignorance of the topic, and/or a lack of patience/discipline.

I was religious about my own break in, counting down the miles until I could let ’er rip. Here’s a pic of my odometer as I arrived at work Thursday...you can bet that the drive home was both highly anticipated and rewarding.

I concur with those suggesting a post break-in oil change and will do so soon.

By the way, I am also north of 40 mpg at 60 mph, and closer to 45 when the road is flat instead of climbing and descending. An engine treated right will treat you right in return :)

I was counting down too.

drove it aggressively for first 1200 miles, not to hard but not to soft… then let her rip…, had it dyno’d at 2500 miles at 373 to the rear wheels, did an oil change and went liquid moly 5-30 and installed a catless down pipe and BM3. Legal weapon lol… love it. Highway runs at 80 mph stomp and @ 110 in a flash…

Nah it should be as easy as:

IF mileage < 1200 then
RPM <= 4500
Else
SEND IT!
