I’m still trying to figure out why anyone would spend time and money making a functional part of the car less functional?

The holes aren't comfortable for my arm/elbow.

Also, it's not a permanent change. It's covering them up for comfort, then uncovering them when it's time to use them.

Your question is like questioning why we're allowed to roll our windows down, when they do such a good job of keeping the wind out when they're up. Sometimes you want to feel the wind and hear the engine. Just like sometimes I want a comfortable resting place for my arm/elbow.

Huh?! Comparing rolling down windows to covering up cup holders? 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's not a literal comparison. It's an analogy.

I'm saying the cup holder covers are an option that don't take away from anything. It just boils down to what you want in the moment. Just like windows being up or down.

Is it strong enough for you to put some weight on it with your elbow? like when you're adjusting yourself in the seat to get comfortable for example..
My arm rests on it while I'm shifting gears. I've adjusted myself in the seat to get more comfortable with it more than a few times without issue. I wouldn't trust to put all of my weight on the center of the caps though.

I believe internally it's either a really stiff cardboard or plastic that's wrapped in a soft, padded, pleather like material.

Its thick cardboard. If you press hard enough the lip/edge of the cup hold gets indented into the covers. Mine for some reason didnt fit snug and would shift just poking it. So I tried pushing them harder to stay in and broke mine.

I would definitely recommend you try the one SupraTyler made. I didn't want the factory ones for the same reason as you. They just seem like they'd be too flimsy/weak over time. The 3D printed ones drop into the cup holder and rest firmly on the bottom. Very secure. It's only $35, so you're not losing much if you don't like them.

Also, I'm not paid by him or anything. I just think it's a cool little addition to my car. It gets the job done.
