Some background. 23 Manual. 420 miles. Purchased car in June 2023. Garage kept and rarely driver. When not in use I keep it on a battery tender. No modifications other than OBD link used to turn off ASD.

Did an oil change myself few months ago and only drove it for a few miles after.

Since the car isn’t broken in yet I haven’t opened it up yet and haven’t gone past 60-70% throttle and even then only occasionally.

This morning took the car out for a long drive. In sport mode like I usually drive it About 15 miles in I got the Drivetrain Warning Message. Pulled over about 20 miles later at a service area and scanned the car.

P13BE
P13C7
P13AL

Cleared the code and drove the rest of the way in normal. No issues. About 5 miles from my destination. (Now about 80 miles later) At a red light I flipped to sport mode and within a couple of minutes the warning came back.

I never opened up throttle, never went past more than about 40-50% throttle. It was mostly highway driving at about 70-90mph.

Any thoughts? Dreading having to take it in for service.

Well, for starters, I believe the first code is referring to a bad connection or short at your bank 2 knock sensor. So, I'd check there.

I found that it was far too easy to exceed 4500 rpm (which violates the break-in restrictions) while in Sport mode. Staying below 100 MPH in normal mode also took some feathering of the throttle until the 1200-mile mark.

Not a Corvette.

What on earth does your unrealistic break-in anxiety have to do with what the OP is asking?

Issue came back after clearing. 2 of the 3 codes remain.
P13BE and P13AE

Did some digging and found this

https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2024033

Seems to fit issue description, manufacturer date etc. Of course it’s in a nearly impossible place to reach without removing the intake manifold. All for a $30 sensor. Oh well.

I’ll make an appointment to bring it in on my next day off.

Thanks everyone.

I think I might have the same issue
I recently got drivetrain issues and the errors are telling that the knock sensors have short circuit.
My car is stock and is at 2100km mileage

Took it to the dealer to have them take a look, but couldn't find any signs of damaged wiring. Will have to bring it back again when the parts arrive.

Keep us posted on how it goes and what they end up replacing.

I just bought 2 knock sensors for $18 each and had it replaced outside the dealer.
Mechanic said one of the sensors were faulty.

The sensor's production date is march 2023, the new ones I bought are april/june 2024.
Idk if this matches the same issue with the bmws' knock sensor recall

Currently the car is being wrapped so I haven't driven many miles on it yet to confirm that the issue is indeed solved.

Just wanted to circle back to close this thread. While others had success clearing the code and just driving the car to resolve the issue, basicallly chalking it up to a low battery charge, I was not as fortunate. I didn’t think it would be my case since the car is usually always on a tender whenever I don’t drive it.

I replaced both knock sensors with oem parts for about $65. Wasn’t too difficult. Just tedious. Just watch a few videos on replacing the intake manifold to understand what’s involved. Drove the car for a little over 100 miles and so far no issues.

Production dates on the old sensors were 11/02/22. New replacement sensors were 9/19/23.
