Hello guys,

I'm new to the forum.
I have had a 2022 3.0 for a bit over a year now ,and i just notice the engine makes this ticking noise after I shut it off.
The noise seems to only come when I just turn off car and after letting it idle for a bit.

Attached is the video, you can hear it if the volume is turned up.

Is this normal or should I go get it checked out?

Do you hear the noise louder at the engine bay or at the exhaust?
Does the sound progressively get slower until it stops or does it just eventually stop abruptly?

Its hard to tell, I tried looking around and it sounds like inside the engine.
The tick progressively gets less & less noisy and then stops.

Metal expansion and retraction
Like razor said, it’s from metal expanding and contracting. The b58 runs hot and everything is cooling down after driving hard. I get metal ticking sound all the time after driving. Especially underneath the car.

Most cars do this. They even added it to the after race menu on Gran Turismo. Neat detail, IMO

That is not the same metal expanding and contracting noise I get. That sounds like a part still rotating after shutoff because of how rhythmic it is. My car still runs the cooler for a few mins after I turn it off depending on the circumstances so maybe it's something related to that? But not in a normal good way.

That sounds way too consistent to be your typical metal expanding/contracting. Typical metal expanding/contracting a random mix of ticks and creeks/cracks.

This sounds like a solenoid, relay, or something electronic constantly triggering.

I found this video from a BMW forum

After the loud buzzing noise goes away, you can hear the same tick tick sound my engine makes

I'm not familiar with the B58 motor but I think that is the system that controls different lift for the cams.

Do you think you can turn your car on, idle it until the Rev go down, and see if it makes the same tick noise close to your exhaust?

Sounds like a relay/solenoid switching to me. How long before it stops? Is it always an exact time? (E.g. when car goes into full sleep mode) Also, maybe pull the engine cover off to get a better idea of where sound is emanating. (You may even be able to feel where it’s coming from) Fuel injector maybe?

Itā€˜s things like this that would make me feel taking it to BMW would be a better choice as you have a bunch of mechanics with way more exposure to random issues with this engine. .

It’s definitely not the exhaust or expansion for me, lol. I know that sound well. Mine is electronic and coming from the engine bay. Our cars are in a nice quiet garage. When you close the garage doors you can hear a pin drop. So… here we go (this is going to piss or freak some people off ?).

My car does the same thing and so does my wife’s 2019 GTi. My 2016 MX5 doesn’t. Someone on here posted a card his dealer gave him saying to always lock the car so it’s not doing electronic things or inadvertently use excess battery juice (I’m very technical as you can tell). I’ll be damned. When I lock both cars, they shut the hell up with all their little clicky noises.

Recently was cleaning my wife’s battery terminals and the damn thing was like R2D2 minus the beeps. I’m like shut the hell up! I’m just cleaning your dadgum battery ? . Same thing when showing my son’s friends the engine bay of the Supra. It’s like when your stomach growls and you don’t want to say anything. Click, buzz, click, hum, click…
