So I'm in the process of removing my old vinyl wrap and it looks like the vinyl wrap has seeped itself into the paint? Would any of you fellas know how to get rid of those black spotty areas? Paint correction maybe? I've tried clay barring to no avail...

Looks like dirty adhesive. Have you tried goo gone or an adhesive remover? I’d try a small bit of goo gone on a corner. Let it soak a bit and wipe it off. Can also apply some heat

Just tried with 99% alcohol and still nothing, it's inside the paint or something... :(

How long did you have the vinyl wrap on for?

Run your hand over the paint. It it feels flat and even, it probably means the clear coat and possibly paint are etched/stained from the adhesive. If a polish and paint correction can’t remove it, the only repair would be a full paint job or another wrap.

You can try a light wet sand as well, but if you’re not familiar with doing that you might cause more damage. Roof wraps shouldn’t be on for more than a year in high heat environments. The heat essentially bakes the adhesive into the clear.

Yep, it's etched in clear coat, will go to a detailer and see what they can do. Lesson learned never leaving wrap on that long again 😩

Is it common knowledge that vinyl wraps need to come off ever couple of years? I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing your mishap. Now we all know. Best of luck, hope your paint is salvageable.

It could be more than a couple years depending on the specific product used. Best advice is to follow the guidance of your installer or the recommendations of the manufacturer of the product used. A lot will depend on the amount of sun/heat exposure during the life of the wrap/film and the quality and/or thickness of the film and adhesives used along with any surface treatments applied over top of the wrap or film. I’ve had PPF removed that was on for 4 to 5 years and it only required a minor polish to remove the remaining adhesive residue, but that was on a vehicle that was garaged at home and in a parking garage while at work. The black vinyl in the OPā€˜s post looks like it was already pretty hammered by the sun based on all the surface cracking, so I can only imagine the adhesive underneath was just as baked. I also see that the OP is in West Texas. It can be pretty brutal on paint and vinyl if the vehicle sits outside most of the time in the desert heat and sun.

If it’s etched, it’s not coming out. There’s a very thin layer you can remove with polishing.
