I think I remember seeing the sticker price back then being around $60,000 but maybe my mind’s playing tricks on me. If it was $60k back then it’s amazing that the modern version came back for less than the original

Thanks so much bk5! Interesting. Modern version does seemlike a tremendous bargain 👍

Car & Driver's 1993 Turbo was $42,000. That's ~$90k in today dollars if you trust CPI inflation figures.

A Corvette was upper 30s for a coupe, low 40s for a 'vert.

I can't find prices on later cars, but given the collapse of the Yen in the subsequent years, anything manufactured in Japan had to go up dramatically in price.
90K is basically what some dealers are asking for the MKV lol

When I bought my 2000 Prelude back in the summer of 1999, I remember going to a Toyota dealer to look at the new (at that time) Celicas. The dealer I went to had no new Celicas, but way in the back tucked away behind the dealership building they had a new black on black 1999 Supra. I don't remember what trim level it was, I only remember it was a manual and did NOT have the big wing spoiler. Their sticker price was in the mid 60K range, which at the time I thought was outrageous.

I don't think it had any markups on it, but I can't remember for sure.

MKIV Supras were about as hard to get as the MKV's are if not more.

They sold terribly.

They were expensive.

Now they're worth something.

Adjusted for inflation, the MKV is significantly cheaper than the MKIV Turbo ever was.

Uneducated fanboys will also never wrap their heads around the fact that the MKIV was technically a sales disaster in the US, and the 2JZ-GTE doesn't come with 800 HP out of the box.

The Mark 4 didn’t sell in huge numbers as a Toyota but did quite well as a Lexus. The NA Lexus started just under where the turbo Supra did. Same platform, same 2JZ, same W58 5 speed and the same LSD.

Not a Corvette.

Yup, I remember them not selling because they were too expensive for what they were. I saw someone post a dyno recently of a bone stock MK4 turbo making just under 300whp on a dynojet. There were like 50+ fanbois saying "THAT MUST BE WRONG, THAT IS WAY TOO LOW"

I lol'd a lot.

I had a 90 mr2 turbo at the time and was checking out a mk4 in 94. Anthracite black paint. Seemed like a black mirror vs a really deep shiny black paint. It was an auto though but I think it was ~$55k.

Yep. It's mind-blowing to me that back in the day a very modestly powered SC300 was very close in price to a fully optioned Supra MKIV Turbo.

One correction-- No Lexus SC300 ever came from the factory with an LSD standard or as an option. Some Canadian SC400's did get the same 200mm Torsen T-1 LSD (either standard or as an option is unclear) as the MKIV NA and MKIV TT Auto but that's the only 92-00 SC that did. The sibling Z30 Soarers on the other hand... a few of its trim levels got either a standard or optional Torsen LSD from the factory.

Lexus really could have helped the SC300 5-speeds and SC400 even more by allowing customers to have the same LSD option that the MKIV NA's could be had with. They could have called it an additional sport package if they had done this.

You have a very beautiful 1997 factory 5-speed btw! Mine is a far less rare 1993 factory 5-speed.
