I lost my key fob ://

So just a quick backstory I bought my car from a Toyota dealership used with about 25K miles on it. I’ve had a car for about a year now and at the time of purchasing it, they only gave me one key fob now I just so happened to get into a little scuffle and the key fob that was hanging on my belt loop fell off. Of course I tried to go back to look for it, but it was gone so I’m almost positive somebody picked it up. This brings me to my current situation where my car is just sitting in my parking lot and I have no way to get in it or even drive it. I tried calling a few dealerships and I got quoted first 1500 from the Toyota dealership near me but as soon as I brought my car in, I got a call from the service manager saying it was going to be 5600 for a new key due to the fact that I lost the first one and apparently it’s a lot more complicated than I thought but 5k seems too much and a little fishy to me at most. I’ve been willing to shell out about 3K and that’s still a little too much if I’m being honest, just wanted to know the other option if I’m completely screwed and I need to shell out 5k in order to get back inside my car or if possibly I could be saved since I never got a second key fob to begin with.

That price seems a bit high compared to what I've seen on here otherwise, but yeah you're probably screwed. Check with some other dealerships but I'd also prepare for a long wait time and look into other transportation if this is your only car.

Why on earth do people not demand the two keys that come with the car when they purchase it. New or used, doesn’t matter. Either provide the second key or drop the price by the (asinine) amount they want to charge.

Not 100% sure how it works with this car, however, I'm guessing it is at least similar. I work at a subaru dealer and I've had people tow their vehicle here before a few times because they lost their only or both keys/fobs.

When this happens we have to take out a module (can't remember the name of it) and send it to Subaru. They then send us back the same part we sent but with 2 programmed keys or the ability to program two new keys to it again. Usually I want to say it ends up costing around 1500-2000 when this happens and subaru stuff is somewhat on the cheap end

Hey man, I just went through this not too long ago. The dealer claims that they have to replace the BDC because that is what their repair manual says to do but thats false. Just order a key from them as if it was an additional key. They come pre-programmed from the factory with your VIN. Your car will start right up. The key will however take a long ass time to arrive. Mine took just under 4 months. Hope this helps!
