It's definitely a myth that engines like the B58 is broken in from factory. It's such a common engine used in SUVs and sedans that BMW isn't going to spend the time and money to break in every single one. It's also why there is a break in section in the owner's manual. Otherwise, it wouldn't matter. There's some pretty good resources out there regarding engine break in.I had the same thoughts about breakin, my trip was about 345 miles down Interstate 81, but was told that the B58 was already broke in and not to worry as some take these to the track on the first day. These are not like a vette which needs that breakin, the manual states to keep the RPM's under 4500 and the speed under 100 MPH for the first 1200 miles which I have accomplished. The manual says nothing about vary speed up and down like other cars I have owed which includes 2 vettes and a Mustang Cobra.
And the consensus between pretty much everything out there is to vary load and speed when the car is new and don't rev it too high or lug the engine. Savagegeese's video has interviews with engineers discussing this very point. The oil analysis in the other video is pretty good evidence that even a Corolla engine needs breaking in but it may not matter as much in a commuter car like that where drivers won't really stress it much by going on track or do any high performance driving. For a Supra, I do strongly believe that a proper break in is essential.
