Hello all,

I have a b58tu with a Pure850 and I have some sort of leak after 1 year of ownership of this turbo. I’m around 32/33 psi in 3rd and 4th gear and 5th gear I see up to 35psi (stock trans I don’t go in 6th gear).

Can someone please look at these photos and let me know what you think?

There is oil at my drain plug area everytime I do an oil change but it’s not a crazy amount. Also my exhaust manifold seems to be melting 😳. The hardlines connected to the pure turbo seems to have signs of an exhaust leak?

My mods:
Pure850
Intake manifold w/ IDX1050cc injectors
Motiv reflex
PR Stage 1 LPFP
Front mount intake
Dinan turbo inlet
CTS charge pipe
Valvetronic exhaust

Three thoughts:

1) Was a new gasket used for the manifold?
2) Was a tightening pattern followed when bolting down the manifold?
3) It looks like your manifold has cracked due to thermal cycling stress. Hard to say if it's a metallurgy problem, a material thinness problem, or a weld failure.

But you absolutely have a leak between the block and the turbo, judging by the soot pattern.

It was installed at a professional shop that works closely with PureTurbos, so I’m not sure how they installed it.

What makes you think the exhaust manifold is cracked?

less than a year or over a year since install? maybe still have warranty? let the shop take a look so you dont need to guess. definitely a leak tho. might just be a gasket?

This looks to be a gigantic crack in the manifold. Is the picture deceptive?

But yes, you have several leaks between the block and the turbo. The shop should revisit the work if it is under warranty. You may need a new gasket, but those are inexpensive.

I don’t see a crack on the exhaust manifold. But regardless, Pureturbos is saying that expansion joint can be welded. Thoughts?

Crazy amount of boost btw. Have you got cooling mods and catch can? If not, i would suggest having a security blanket. Hope you get it sorted. My aim is to run a larger turbo and no more than 20psi to induce a little lag vs my stock turbo, reduce temps but provide a more linear power delivery for circuit work. I cant decide between pure turbos or TTE ( i have used them in the past with no issues)

Catch cans are like the most over hyped not needed thing. I don’t run one and have no issues and no oil in the intake tract. 60+ events. 30psi out the top. YMMV.

I don’t run one because they have caused more issues than solutions in my past experience.

I have the PCV block off pins from bmr with Ross racing oil cap breather and banjo fitting/filter at the PCV. I like this setup because you don’t have to maintain a catch can, just Vent to atmosphere. My engine bay doesn’t get oily at all.

Whilst agreed they can be problematic if not maintained, especially those annoying ones you have to empty..........a direct injection car would benefit immensely as no fuel washes over the intake valves but they are an added serviced item that can be a Pain the ass.

I have run them on all my race engines ( which were built by Mostech Race engines of Supercar V8 fame) in the past but not a true catch-can per se...... More just a pcv breather that vents a tube under car to atmosphere.....not entirely legal down here for road use but the benefits to keeping the knock ratio down was evident as it kept it all clean in the combustion chamber. SPEC R in the UK used to make some quality race bred items but not for this donk unfortunately. For most uses though, they aren't really necessary but for high crankcase pressure and high boost, a breather is something I would definitely look at.
