Made a newbie mistake and purchased and installed the 96Y non XL Michelin Pilot 4s’s on the rear tires. Is it the end of the world? Should I return them and opt for the 100Y Extra Load instead? What would be the disadvantage if I keep the 96Y? Is it a safety issue for the car?

I wouldn't worry about it personally. If it costs you nothing to dismount them, ship them back with no restocking fee, and reorder new ones then sure go ahead and do it but I wouldn't think that's an option.

Return them and tell them what happened. I’m sure they will help / work with you.
