Sounds about right... o_O

Received 1 key when I bought my car from auction.
Luckily found previous owner's number in the glovebox and messaged him to get the other key.
Oh I definitely tried that!!

Yeah man. You unlock the car with your working key, with the new key next to it. Then have someone take your working key at least 30-40 feet away so the car doesn't sense it, while you still have the new key in your hand. Then get in, hold the new key onto the key symbol on the steering column (where you'd normally insert a key, there's a symbol there) and then start the car. The key is ordered directly to your vin, so I'm fairly sure it's already programmed.
Cool, thanks. I ordered the replacement key from the toyo dealership 6 weeks ago to my vin and it has finally arrived, but they want me to schedule an appt with service to "program it". I'm pre 6/2020 dme (still stock tune currently) and without the recall update. I don't want them to have to connect anything to the car to "program" the key. I'm hoping they will still hand me the key direct from the parts department and I can try this process.

Yeah man, they tried to get me to set up an appointment, too. I told them no thanks, let me try some things first. I'm also pre 6/20 with no recall done. I don't want those fucks touching my car honestly. I tried the way above, and it worked!

No no, lol, I think the two of us with only one bought ours wholesale, or close to it, and they only had one key. New gets two still.

Just finished pair my new 2nd key using the procedure provided by @Joebednar4 above, and it worked flawlessly! It did take me several presses of the ignition button with the new key held beside the steering column, but on the 3rd or 4th try the car started and a new key profile setup menu popped up. Thanks again @Joebednar4 from preventing me from having to have the dealer attempt to pair it and potentially lock my pre 6/20 dme with a software update.

My man!! That's awesome!! Mine took a couple times pressing the start button, too. I thought it might have just been me not taking my time. I'm glad it worked!!

I need a key, bought car from an owner that only got one from a dealer. Any tips on where to get it? Local dealer wants $1k.
Try another dealer. I paid $663 for new cut key and new matching fob at a Central PA dealer. I programmed it myself as described above.

I agree with mxm64, find another dealer. You'll likely have to wait forever for it, but $1k is obnoxious, and that dealer does not want your business.
