Hello everyone, new to the forum and a new Supra owner. I recently purchased the 2021 Toyota Supra 3.0 L. So I read that the dealership recommends oil changes at every 10 K miles however, I feel like that’s a little excessive. What are your guy’s thoughts and opinions? Should I change it earlier (if so, when should I change it) or just wait? I currently only have 500 miles but was just wondering when the time comes.

Let the original factory oil do it's thing.
The longer the better and since your 2021 model monitor your oil level regularly.
Thanks for your response, I appreciate it! Yeah I was just a little worried because I’ve never driven anything with a BMW engine and I guess just paranoid about breaking anything even though I have warranty lol

A lot of us change the oil around 1200 miles after the break-in. After that, it depends on how you use the car. If you drive like a grandma, 10k miles will be fine. If you track the car, you should do it more often. A lot of us also put in a thicker 5W-30 oil as we feel the 0W-20 factory fill is too thin.

Okay awesome, thanks for the reply. Yeah I’ll definitely change it myself at 1200 then have Toyota do it at 10k cause my local dealership refuses to change it until it’s the “recommended” 10k.

Yeah I don't let them touch mine lol unless absolutely necessary. Car is super easy to work on. I think you need a 32mm socket for the oil filter housing and that's pretty much it that's out of the norm.

I would change it at 1200 miles then again at 5K and 10K after that. If you have excessive oil consumption issues you will know between 2500-3000 miles.

The type of oil is up to you. Some have had good luck with the GR 0w-20 oil from Toyota. I personally think it’s too thin and has the same consistency as water. I’m running the 5w-30, it’s the better oil for this engine.

Have changed at 2500 and 7500 so far.
I do 3 or so track days a month and I just can't bring myself to leave it in there that long.

Worst case I wasted couple hundred bucks- about my typical bar tab.

Best case is I avoid a warranty claim hassle

Yup, more frequent oil changes is simply cheap insurance. You wont hurt the car changing the oil too frequently, but you will blow it up changing it too late.

Curious to know why some think the oil recommended by BMW engineers would be in any way dangerous to use? Trust engineers and not lay people?

Here is a good thread on the subject. Basically its the US CAFE standards that are pushing to use the lighter weight oils.

In the UK they use 5w-30 for most of Toyota vehicles. But hey if its good enough for the Prius and Yaris its good enough for the Supra. ?

It's not "dangerous" to use, but it's used for the wrong reasons. Oil's purpose is engine protection, and we're getting shoved 0W-20 down our throats for reasons that have nothing to do with that.

Yes for MPG. But I suspect its perfectly reasonable to use it, especially since the engineers know how these cars will most likely be used. Typically you'd recommend the safest product possible while meeting regulatory requirements.

Maybe 5-30 is overkill.

So there was a shop I believe European Road & Race who did a tear down of a 3 series engine that had done the factory oil changes to the tee at the dealer and after about 75k the motor ran fine, but had collected sludge in quite a few places. Also keep in mind these turbos use the same oil from the pan as the engine. So IMO 10k mile oil changes is asking for stuff to blow up or at the very least not run optimally. I would say 5k at the most and will be changing every 3k, but that's just me.
