I've got the r8. Based on my research a month or so back when I bought it...the r7 and r8 were more or less considered best in class and while I knew the difference was minimal I'd rather have the latest greatest so I'm not second guessing myself down the road.

No complaints whatsoever on the r8. It's surprisingly good with false alarms (compared to previous radar detectors I've had, which its been years so no surprise). Have it mounted with a blendmount and it doesn't bother my line of sight at all.

I run Valantine1 gen2 interfaced with JBV1 crowd sourced via saber on my smartphone. Of course, if you run a CrApple phone JBV1 or Highway Radar app is not available to you. It could be worth running an Android just for this software. Saber gives much better crowd-sourcing than google maps or Waze.

In my area detectors are legal. It is not a ticket-proof machine but a tool in the box combined with common sense. The detector cost me $500; it paid for itself if it saves just one ticket.

@Tomm63 I was driving through Ontario, Canada where possession / use of one is illegal hence the reason mine was seized on the spot.

I have a Uniden R8 in the Supra and an Escort Max 360c MKii in the daily.

The R8 has slightly better range - but every single Honda Odyssey/passport, a few Mazdas and a handful of other cars will trigger false k-band alerts.

The Max 360c MKii has slightly less range than the R8 (if the R8 picks up a signal let’s say two miles away, this one picks it up at 1.5 miles), but there are less false alerts - so this one is the one to get if you want a quieter one for daily drives.

Both have saved me from a few parked CHPs - here in so cal CHP seem to mostly use KA bands. Both also have GPS functionality as well so they will remember and auto mute stationary radar signals after a couple of drives.

If you want to save cash - the Uniden R3 is a solid performer without directional alerts. Also I read previously that the Uniden R7 (which has directional alerts) can be flashed to have many of the features of the R8.

Agree with you - would have loved to get the Redline 360c… but it was so expensive and I told myself I don’t need the jammer/stealth functionality since detectors are not illegal in CA.

Yeah i dont care much about the stealth features, i just wanted the absolute best unit for the Supra, and at the time, this was it. I may upgrade to the Redline 360ci when it becomes available at my installer.

I have an R7 in the Tesla. Its a good unit, but has more FP than the escort by far. Some of the newer K-blocks help with that a lot.

Im running a R3 in my other daily but am replacing it with a 360 MKII when the new daily arrives. 360 MK11 has 95% of the capability of the RL 360c, but is much cheaper.

So is speeding/reckless driving…. I never really understood how the gov gets away with outlawing something like radar detectors.

I use the Valentine 1, Gen 2, and love it. I previously ran(and still have it) a V1, Gen 1. I'm waiting on the chip industry to catch up with demand, and I will be able to have that Gen 1 updated to a Gen 2. I have used the Valentine detectors for quite a few years, and am very happy with them.

I’ve heard great things from the R3 but I wonder if the extra FOUR hundred is worth the R8 upgrade … I want to be one and done with the detectors so I’m wondering if investing the money is worth it. I’ll put it on my Bestbuy card anyway.

Running a fairly old V1 still. I will probably upgrade it to a gen 2 soon. It’s saved me a few times.
