Stock brake pad life

I just got a notice that my front brakes need changing at 20k miles. Is this normal? I’ve only done 1 track day.

How's the pad look?
It's a wear item. It wears when you use it. It wears more with aggressive driving. Pads can be killed in 5k miles or 25k miles. Your driving habits will affect your brake pad longevity.

It's not the mileage. You could commute to work on highway and rarely use the brakes. Or you can live on a steep hill and encounter many hills where you drive. Of course, the number of track days will make a big difference.

If you don’t mind cleaning your car, Hawk HPS 5.0 pad will give you a night & day performance difference. We keep them on my wife’s GTI. It’s so noticeably better, she no longer complains about the dust.

If you just want a clean looking wheel, get ceramic pads. In general, lower dust = less stopping power, more dust = greater stopping power. All that matters to most who aren’t tracking on a regular basis.

Interestingly, my rear pads wore out first (38K miles). The fronts still have plenty of pad left on them. I replaced them with stock pads & rotors since I don't track my car.

I agree with Mark (FLTrack). I've used Hawk pads on a previously-owner sportscar and liked their gripping power.
