Hey, I just recently picked up a 21 Supra 3.0 Premium. Ive been trying to do my research on the best exhaust setup with stock downpipe. I’m stuck between tomei type D and Borla Atak. If any of you guys have heard Both, which sounds better in person?

Borla is a more refined sound.. not loud..
But the carbon fiber tips do not hold up to the temps.. my tips are completely brown and the clear coat is hazy..

love the sound though!

Neither. AWE Touring. Stock downpipe or even high flow catted? Get the non-res touring. Catless? Get the resonated touring (non-res still sounds awesome, just a little loud). NO DRONE

Not the Tomei. Per their info the exhaust is a full 3.18” until the Y. At least with Borla you can get a downpipe and make the system a true 3.5”

Thank you for the response! How much louder would you say the Borla is compared to the stock exhaust. I find the stock exhaust extremely quiet so I’m looking for a good increase in sound. Do you think I would get that with the Borla on stock downpipes?

Do you know which would be louder on stock downpipes and if it’s a significant difference?

In comfort setting it’s pretty quiet!
In sport setting it’s probably 30% louder than stock.. but it sings pretty well in high rpms
I do have an AA downpipe so the exhaust is a little louder..

the Borla definitely is not loud! It has a great tone without being obnoxious..
*It has more bass..
*Not raspy ( some people like the raspy sound)..
*Zero drone ( or I haven’t noticed any in the 3 years I’ve had the system)..

I would say if you are looking for “loud” the Borla isn’t a good choice!

hope this helps
Steve

the tomei is definitely gonna be louder but more raspy! More hollow sounding!?

Thank you, it helps a lot. I do want a deep tone with bass but I also want to hear a good difference from the stock exhaust. Do you have any videos of your Supra before you got an aftermarket downpipe?

Fuck if I know. Either way, Tomei is a shit choice for the exhaust restriction that will cost you 20whp with that small diameter piping.

I’ve not seen another modified Supra in person other than my own since 2006.

I installed an Active Autowerke catted downpipe in the third week of ownership, and a week later followed that up with an Active Autowerke catback as it maintains the exhaust valve and is a full single 3.5” until the muffler. It gives it a cleaner sound that is more like a classic 2JZ-GTE with a single turbo conversion.

I have an AWE Touring Resonated paired with AA High-Flow and previously ran the Borla Atak. The AWE is slightly quieter than the Borla in every scenario except cold start.

That’s interesting, I wanted to go the non res route so maybe that would be louder than the Borla? Regardless, which do you prefer personally?

My understanding is that the resonated vs non-res doesn't make a significant difference in volume, but instead reduces drone. On a day-to-day basis, I personally like the tone of the AWE better. I drive in the city often and found the Borla too loud in sport mode-especially when the car popped or burbled.
