Tuning Options - A91 MT

I'm new to the Supra, my MT will be here next month. I'd like to add a downpipe and tune but from what I've read the ECU hasn't been cracked and there are no tunes available. I currently own a 911 Turbo and wanted to build this Supra for the tracks around Texas, ECR, Cresson and COTA. However, if it can't be tuned I'm wondering if I should pass the MT along to someone else. Is it just this ECU or will future BMWs like the upcoming M2 have the same issue?

All Bosch MG1 ECUs dated > 06.2020. BMWs, Porsche, MB, etc. all use the same hardware locked ECU. The only solutions are outlined here: https://willmy062020plusecugotorussia.com/

From what I understand, the Ecu being locked is for all new and future bmw's

Understood, that suuuuucks.

While not a true ECU tune. The BMS jb4 piggyback tune is the bandaid most people have chosen to apply while the ECU Unlocking gets sorted. Some people even prefer it for the ease of changing MAPs and removal.

JB4 is the cheaper option for more power. For tracking purposes, there's a lot you can invest in with regards to handling for better lap times before you even need to consider more power.

Consdering you're hitting the track, you might not be wishing for as much power as you'd think. Stock supras really put it down on the track, especially after dialing suspension a bit more. They rip!

For road tracks I would focus on these 4 items before worrying about more power.

1- Brakes (BBK calipers, pads, fluid)
2-Tires (265 front, 295 rear, nice and sticky)
3- Suspension (coil-overs, sway bars, SPL parts)
4- Aero (think big wang Verus setup)

Since you own a Porsche pretty much what that car has with it from the factory.

Weird thought.. Could I mount the stock rear tires (only 1k miles) to the front and buy some 295s for the rear or would there be rubbing? I'd imagine the traction and handling would be great?

Agreed with all of the above. Tuning is available with an offshore unlock. It's expensive but in the grand scheme its not that abusive if you are building a setup that requires tuning. Basic bolts-ons do not.

I track mine with intake and DP as the only power mods (and only the DP is doing anything there - intake is just for sound). I have a JB4 but only us it for logging on the road course since more boost just means more heat and it's been 90° + here. Also echoing above that power mods are way down the list if you plan to track the car. The usual - brakes (just a pad and fluid change does wonders), tires, suspension, etc.. and the car is extremely capable and fun. If you want more power then you're going to need more cooling.

No need for a larger brake kit. The OEM calipers work just fine with upgraded pads and fluid.

Yes you could. 295 is a bit wide on a 18x10 for the rear though. The OEM PSS tires kinda suck on track for anyone that is at a good pace.

If somebody did want to keep the OEM wheels, I would fit some better tires on it, like Falken RT660, Yoko A052, Goodyear Supercar 3, etc. Even with keeping the OEM sizes, it would be a huge level up in grip compared to stock.

This is where I am. Still debating which to go with (and availability can be an issue).

The stock tires did ok for me the first time out. I just did 2 days this past weekend and even with a slightly more aggressive alignment after the first few sessions I lost a significant amount of grip. Off 3 seconds from my previous outing! ~4000 miles and about 40% tread on the rears and had to leave the TC on completely to avoid a black flag from drifting around the carousel. ?
