Check to see if the turbo has shaft play. If you can move the shaft back and forth that is not good. Some turbo companies allow a tiny amount when you go up and down. Others don't want any.
there is shaft play but i don’t exactly know what’s considered in and out of spec.

Any back and forth is out of spec. If it's up and down is your turbine or compressor wheel rubbing on the housing?

Yeah hard to tell if that's machining marks on the housing or fins hitting...but I'm not seeing any damage on the fin ends from the picture. If you had a boreoscope (forgive my spelling) you could look between the fins to check for damage. Also how's the compressor side look?

From the video I watched though if I had to guess I bet your bearings for the turbo are not happy.

Since you bought that forum members turbo you could compare them with shaft play and how they spin.

the compressor side had no shaft play oddly enough. solid as a rock compared to the exhaust side. I plan to take detailed pictures and document what exactly happened in this thread once i pop off the turbo this weekend

I get that you've already modded the vehicle, but one could say you haven't touched the turbo (unless f'ed it during downpipe) (meaning you haven't done things that could cause such a play or marks in the turbo). I feel like the chances of a successful claim could be affected if you take the turbo out as well. But I'm no expert, just friendly caution.

my biggest worry is they will blame me for over boosting and look at the flash count and see its at like 7. I appreciate the friendly caution, but I just want to avoid the dealership for this one. Maybe try my chances at an warranty claim for something more expensive (god forbid something happens in the future). i also plan to go pure turbo come winter and sending in a good core will save me some change in the long run.

That impeller has definitely contacted the housing. The fins even look a little bent.

Here’s what mine looks like for comparison.

@Kamry Yeah that sounds like a bad turbo, and im surprised you didnt blow oil or coolant. Check your oil level asap.

any play in the shaft is out of spec, and that sounds like one of the wheels is impacting the housing.

what kind of RPMs did your tuner have the turbo spinning?

edit- just saw above that you found the impact. Time for a turbo upgrade homie. Find a tuner that uses or know how to use a turbo rpm gauge. Itll be easy to install while the thing is apart and tells you how on the limit your boost level actually is.

wow you are totally right! i kinda assumed it was just some weird design LOL. I appreciate the comparison picture. its quite a relief knowing what’s actually going on here

if memory serves, and correct me if I am wrong, visconti got his start a while back on Subaru’s. I seem to recall him cranking out some pretty spicy files then. There are massive differences between a b58 and an ej series motor, and boost control is one of them.

i am purely speculating, but MY GUESS is that you blew your turbo because of a pressure spike backstalling the compressor during your downshift. I believe my first post regarding rpm was incorrect given this information, and i should have seen that from the turbine wheel impact.

the b58 doesnt have a blow off valve, so your tuner has to be on point with controlling pressure spikes. It requires a lot of attention to getting the WG fully open on throttle lift from high load, and then making sure the cam overlap is dialed correctly to allow excess pressure to bleed off through the valves and out of the exhaust. He has to know what he is doing with valvetronic‘s delayed load control protocols.

if this isnt done correctly, the torsional torque against the turbo shaft will cause the bearing to fail (or the shaft to break) and youll have wheel impact Like you experienced. Youll generally see a turbine wheel hit on a backstall failure, and a compressor wheel hit if the failure is due to overdriving the shaft speed.

alternatively, you can add a blow off valve. Something like this: https://bigboostturbo.com/products/n55-s55-b58-blow-off-valve-kit

if it were my car, id find a new tuner. He shouldnt need a log to know that has to be done. Personally, id find a tuner thats writing files for road course guys, but thats just me. If you opt to give him another chance, explain what happened and tell him to focus on that issue. If you were otherwise happy with the tune, then the bov kit would alleviate the pressure spike issue and let the tuner get away with a little lazier valvetronic control. One possible advantage to that approach would be quicker return to full manifold pressure when you get back on the throttle, because the compressor hasnt had to slow down as much.

@Rocksandblues what do you think?

I really appreciate the detailed response. It really shined some light on what possibly happened here to a novice like myself.

I want to give Visconti another chance because I've already committed and shelled out money, but I will do my best to explain what's going on and hopefully they can make it right. If not, I'll have to bite the bullet and find a new tuner, Any recommendations?

I think I'll be adding a blow off valve also.
