OP - Thanks for the DIY.

Does anyone know whether Fumoto offers a valve for the Supra? My WRX has a vertically mounted plug as well and it can become pretty messy when removing the plug. Since the Supra does not have a dipstick I cannot extract the oil from the top.. therefore, I'd like to install a Fumoto valve (as I do most of my cars) when I do the first oil change. TIA

I guess they do... but this red area is recessed, correct? Then the valve will not fit.

Need to take Fumoto's compatibility matrix with a grain of salt as it only looks at the thread diameter and pitch. I've had an issue on my other car (Ford Fiesta ST) where they said it fits, but did not because of the surrounding oil pan how it is shaped. But on that car the plug removes horizontally so less chance for splash.

Anyway, when I do the Supra's oil change next Spring, I'll do a reverse funnel thingie with masking tape to prevent oil spill/splash above the lower shroud before removing the plug.

You just Need the size and fumoto support will tell you what styles are available.
Be warned, it is going to stick straight down and you do not have that much room before you hit the plastic cover. The red area is not really recessed, rather, there is a lip that goes around. You can see how the red area and the area on the other side of the lip are kind of in line. The bolt head is pretty shallow.

edit
I used a valve on other cars because in the event i overfilled it was easy to adjust. In this car due to the lack of a dipstick just dump in the 6.9 quarts and the car will ā€œdigitallyā€ tell you all good. The crush washer is included with the oil filter. The reason why i put one of these valves on the mishimoto catch can drain tube is because that tube was easily damaged as a result of it being thin aluminum and having screwed it up once before, i figure it would be better to add a drain and be done with it. I was considering adding a valve here but opted not to for the reasons stated.

Natek - Fumoto valve's open/close lever is on a 90 degree angle that sticks out pretty far; and how the drain hole is recessed inside the lip (the red circle I drew above) I don't think the Fumoto will even fit on the car. I mean it's only $25 so I can give it a shot and toss it in my parts bin if it doesn't fit, but better if there is another valve that is known to fit properly.

As for the Supra not having a dip stick, the more reason why I want to install the controlled drain on the bottom. Had it had a dip stick, I can just extract excess oil out through the dip stick tube. I've done that on my other cars for overfill and full oil service. I'd never have to remove anything from under the car in this case as the filter was accessible from the engine bay on this particular car.

Again, not that this is a big deal or anything.. just something to make our lives easier.

Great DIY write up...now I have a stupid question/questions...My car only has 350 miles. When should I do my first oil change? I know Toyota says 10,000 miles,.....but??. I am used to changing my oil every 5,000, should I keep that up? If I follow a 5,000 mile schedule will changing the oil more often cause an issue with the computer? I am an Amsoil dealer, and really like their oils and filters. I currently use their Amsoil Signature series 0W-20 in my Highlander. Will that be adequate to use in the Supra? Amsoil also has a European formula 0W-20, or just stick with the Toyota Synethic?
Use the Amsoil European 0W-20, it exceeds the requirements

Awesome write-up.
Just did my change. Late to the party.

I'd say, pic is a must. I filled the plastic bag that o-ring came in with some oil and dumped the o-rings in there to coat them.

I had driver side of the car up. Drained for hours. Then lowered it to remove filter. Then put it back up. Obviously more oil got drained after this.
Should have lifted from the passenger side instead, like OP's picture.

I thought after draining for few hours, there'd not be much oil left in the filter. I took precautions and placed towels around, but as I wasn't expecting a gush of oil, some leaked a bit. I was able to clean.

For me the plastic cover was a bitch to remove and put it back on. Wish I had a lift...

My LE car didn't come with the washer. Luckily replacement did.

I wrote this on another thread, I'm writing it here again:

2 things I've discovered during. I don't know if both were pure coincidence...
1) When I went in the menu to measure oil, I couldn't click on it despite the drive I had. Exited the menu, got back in, then it was available.
2) Went in the on board computer menu to reset, it said reset was possible and set it at 6000 miles. But when I pressed yes, it said unsuccessful. I tried once again and the reset was successful, this time at 9000miles. So, moral of the story, don't give up ?

Awesome writeup!!! Thanks!

Question, is it possible/advised to "fill" the oil filter canister?

Back in my E46 days, people would advise to fill the oil filter canister with oil to prevent starvation on the initial start.

Hard to tell from the pics (and I haven't done an oil change yet).

I did not fill the filter canister as I did not want to make a mess in the engine bay. It is bad enough you canā€™t cleanly remove the filter without a drip in the engine bay. My WRX, Golf-R, not even one drip when I remove their filters from the engine bay.

Yes, those the exact ramps I have in my garage. I will try and get some clearance measurements with the car on them and post them up.

Awesome, I really like those ramps.
