Hi,

This may be the dumbest question ever: how do you turn the car off?

(I can already hear the responses, "Well, just whisper to it how much you love it on the first date or tell it how much money you make”)

In the "Doors/Keys" option in the menu, I have the box checked that says something like "turn car off when door is opened". However, 50% of the time when I shut the car off (i.e., push start/stop button, put parking brake on, release brake pedal and open the door) the dashboard and iDrive screen stay on (pic below). The other 50% of the time the dashboard and iDrive screen turn off. I cannot find a pattern for why it shuts off or stays on.

It's a First World problem as I can always hold the volume/power button down for 2-3 seconds or lock it to turn the car off. But, I wonder why sometimes it turns off and sometimes it stays on?

ps-I may do another post for "How does your car greet you when you turn it on?" You can see I have a very honest relationship with my car.

The car stays in standby mode for like 6 minutes, or until you lock it. You can also hold down the volume button, but it's not necessary.

music always shuts off for me when I open the door. There's been a few times it hasn't but I just lock the car and walk away. Never had an issue.

Do you have something sitting on the passenger seat? Turn off the car, open the door, the electronics should shut off. If you have a passenger, they need to open their door too.

Otherwise, it'll be 7 minutes.

Thank you. Part of my motivation is trying to avoid unnecessary drain (like standby mode) on the battery. As a former BMW owner, I know replacing the battery is not simple.

Just me. No passengers or anything sitting on the passenger seat also. It's a good thought though. Thanks

There is a turn off feature in the menu's. It's a bit quicker just to hit and hold the volume/power dial. Just trying to save the battery a bit by not going into standby mode for 6-7 min. Thanks

it's not that difficult to turn the car off, you simply push the "options" button at the rear of the infotament control wheel, it gives you two options "turn off display" or "turn off the car"
edit ; this is with ignition in standby, not with ignition on. it's possible it will work then as well but I haven't tried it

Push the start/stop button, then open the door. If you open the door before you push the button the infotainment system will stay on. If you have a passenger, both of you will need to open the door before it will shut off. Additionally, if you’re on a phone call then no matter what order you do it, the infotainment system will stay on. In either case, get out, close the door, and then lock it. Locking the door will shut everything off regardless of what path you took to get there. If you shut off the ignition/open the door in the wrong order, and then don’t lock the door, it’ll stay running for ~6 min before shutting itself off as others have said.

The car appears to use very little current in that state as the AC can continue to run, yet my battery tender does not detect the battery level from dipping under float voltage.

Of course I tell my wife and kids to turn off the lights in the house when not in use all the time like a crazy old man..

I've been trying to figure out the logic as well, currently I can't tell but I have a theory the car tries top detect if you're idling or not. If I press the start/stop button and the dash says off, then I immediately open the door it'll shut everything off. But If I turn the car off and then idle for a moment, it'll keep playing music when I open the door and only pauses as I close the door (very annoying if I'm listening to a podcast)

I've never worried about actual drain to the car, both BMW and Toyota would have tested the downsides of this method and they chose to go with it /shrug

I’m pretty sure saying those things will turn ON a Supra…

To turn OFF a Supra, I would say something along the lines of “I have a batshit crazy baby daddy/mommy” “I’m a convicted felon” “I’m on government assistance and rely on EBT/food stamps” “I have STDs” ya know, the typical…

I think having a small peepee helps too ?

Mine seems to decide if it turns off the radio or not, so i just hit the mute button before shutdown and figure the screen will go off eventually LOL - mine sits for long periods and has not yet failed to start, so seems to work for me.....
