Break in road trip?

Hi everyone, long time lurker, first time poster.

so my supra is coming in mid June to an Oklahoma dealer, and I live in California dealer is selling msrp, so I jumped on it.

however I’m in a dilemma of sorts.

If I want it shipped here, it’s 1850 bucks, and I just feel like that’s too much. If I were to get a flight there and drive it back the 1200 miles, I would be well under 500-600 bucks, almost 1/3 the price of the shipping.

and this is where the dilemma kicks in.
I read somewhere that you can’t drive a brand new car at a steady rpm, i just wanted to figure out if this is truly the case. And has anyone else done a roughly 1200 mile trip in their brand new car, with any adverse effects?

would it even be advisable? Or shall I just bite the bullet for shipping?

In all honestly, you'll probably be fine. Several folks here didn't bother following the break-in at all and just sent it right from the beginning.

Bought my 2.0 in Pennsylvania and drove it back to California in 3 days with my brother. Did the break in oil change at 1500 in OKC; did another oil change at 5k, and currently at 6k. Everything seems fine still, oil seemed alright. Only thing to maybe look out for is rock chips, but if you just drive a little farther back from other cars, you should be fine.

Don't worry about it. Enjoy the drive back and take in the scenery. Hell, you could plan a really nice road trip and see pretty much all of the natural wonders in the US on your way back if that's something you're into. I also picked up my car from a dealership that's far from me (not nearly as far as you though) and I just drove the hell out of it. Let the engine warm up, floor it every now and again, and use engine braking to slow down sometimes; the car will be fine. I'd just recommend an oil change soon after you get home but that's just because I'm anal about stuff like that. If you haven't done it already I definitely recommend a wind buffeting fix. I personally like the gloss black AMS or AWE solutions. Ditto on what @SoulLinked said about rock chips. I had my car PPF'd before picking it up, and I highly recommend it. If you want to go by the book, the manual only says to keep it under 4500rpm and 100mph for the first 1200 miles. I went on a ~1000 mile road trip a couple of days after I picked up the car. Even though I don't think it makes a huge difference in terms of longevity, I still did vary my vehicle speed and revs when driving on the interstate.

I tried to not let it sit at a constant speed for more than 5-10 mins and used the paddle shifters to change up the revs when I wanted to stay at the same vehicle speed. When slowing down to stop, I would purposely manually downshift with the paddles to get the tach dancing up to 4000 rpm. It was my way of keeping myself entertained on a long trip and also to get acquainted with the new car. And if I got a few revs up past 4500rpm, so be it.

Like others said, don't worry about it too much and just enjoy the car and the trip!

You're going to get probably two groups of replies. One will say send it and don't look back. The other will say go by the book, stay under 4500rpms until 1200 miles.

IMO as long as you keep your RPMs constantly moving and never let it sit in the same range for long periods of time, you'll be fine.

GR_Matt^ there gave a good example. I pretty much did the same thing with mine, but did send it a couple times below 1200 miles.
